Unisex Howie lab coat

Description

The Howie Unisex Lab Coat (Grey) from Work in Style is a premium polycotton laboratory coat designed for professional use in healthcare, laboratory and clinical environments. Based on the classic Howie style, it features an offset nine-stud fastening with a broad underlay to prevent gaping, knitted cuffs for secure wrist coverage, back darts for a more tailored fit and three jetted pockets (one breast, two hip) for practical storage. Manufactured in a polyester/cotton mix fabric, whites are supplied in a heavier 245 gsm fabric and colours (including grey) in a lighter 195 gsm weight to balance durability and comfort. Available in chest sizes 30\–54\ and three lengths (Regular 42\, Tall 44\, Extra Tall 46\), the coat is unisex and suitable for both scientific and medical settings where protective overgarments are required.

  • Three jetted pockets (one chest, two hip) provide practical storage for pens, notepads, phones and small instruments.

Usage

  • Select the correct chest size, length (Regular, Tall, Extra Tall) and colour as per the wearer’s measurements and workplace requirements.
  • Put on the coat over normal work clothing, ensuring shoulders and sleeves are correctly positioned.
  • Fasten all nine studs using the offset front closure so the broad underlay sits flat and the front does not gape.
  • Ensure knitted cuffs sit snugly around the wrists to maintain coverage and avoid interference with equipment.
  • Use breast and hip pockets for lightweight items only (e.g. pens, ID cards, small instruments); avoid overloading pockets with heavy objects that may distort the garment.
  • Launder the coat regularly in accordance with the care label and local infection-control policies (e.g. appropriate wash temperature and cycle; typically suitable for healthcare or industrial laundry).
  • Inspect periodically for damage such as torn seams, worn cuffs or failed studs; repair or replace the coat if protective function is compromised.
  • Do not use the coat as protection against hazards beyond its intended scope (e.g. not suitable as a substitute for specialised chemical or flame-retardant PPE).

Contraindications

  • Not designed to provide protection against high-risk chemical, biological or radiological hazards; specialised PPE is required for such exposures.
  • Not flame-retardant; should not be used as primary protection in environments with significant fire or high-heat risks.
  • Individuals with known sensitivities or allergies to polyester, cotton blends or specific dyes should use with caution or select alternative garments.
  • Do not wear if the garment is visibly damaged (e.g. torn fabric, broken studs, heavily frayed cuffs) where protective coverage is compromised.

Adverse Effects

  • Prolonged wear in hot environments may contribute to heat discomfort or sweating.
  • Possible mild skin irritation in individuals sensitive to polycotton fabrics, elasticated cuffs or textile dyes.
  • If caught in machinery or moving parts, loose garments may present an entanglement hazard; ensure local safety guidelines on clothing are followed.

Storage Conditions

  • Store clean coats in a dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight to prevent fading and fabric degradation.
  • Hang on coat hooks or hangers to maintain shape and minimise creasing; avoid prolonged storage in damp conditions.
  • Keep soiled garments in designated laundry bags or containers and launder promptly according to infection-control policy.
  • Avoid contact with sharp edges or rough surfaces in storage that could tear or snag the fabric.

Duration

Reusable garment intended for daily/regular use over an extended period, subject to wear, laundering and local infection-control replacement policies.

Onset

Immediate protective coverage upon donning and fastening the coat correctly.
