Catheter insertion procedure pack

Description

The Cath-it Acute Plus Catheter Insertion Pack - Medium - Single (NHS EHC1173) is a sterile, latex-free catheterisation procedure pack manufactured by Richardson Healthcare. It is designed for acute hospital settings and contains all the supporting materials required to perform urethral catheter insertion while allowing the clinician to select the most appropriate catheter, leg bag and lubricant. The pack is specifically configured to support aseptic non-touch technique (ANTT), helping to promote best practice and minimise the risk of catheter-associated infection. The medium variant corresponds to the medium-sized Cath-it Acute Plus pack (RHC code 908425, NHS code EHC1173).

Bnefits

  • Provides all key accessories required for urethral catheter insertion in a single sterile pack, improving procedural efficiency.
  • Supports aseptic non-touch technique through an appropriate combination of sterile field, drapes, tray, gallipot and non-woven items.
  • Latex-free construction reduces the risk of latex-associated allergic reactions for patients and healthcare staff.
  • Compact, ready-to-use configuration saves preparation time versus assembling individual components from stock.
  • Allows clinicians freedom to choose catheter size/type, leg bag and lubricant to meet individual patient and formulary requirements.
  • Designed specifically for acute care environments, helping standardise catheterisation practice across wards and departments.
  • Includes two pairs of examination gloves within the pack to support the recommended two-glove ANTT workflow (initial set-up and catheter handling stages).
  • Cost- and time-effective alternative to more complex catheterisation sets, while still promoting best practice and infection prevention.

Indications

  • Intended for use in urethral catheterisation procedures in acute hospital and similar clinical settings.
  • Suitable for adult patients requiring urethral catheter insertion where a sterile, single-use catheterisation pack is indicated.
  • Designed as an accessory pack to be used alongside a suitable urinary catheter, collection system and lubricant according to local clinical guidelines.

Composition

  • Single sterile Cath-it Acute Plus catheterisation pack (medium variant, NHS code EHC1173, RHC code 908425).
  • Contents of each sterile pack (Cath-it Acute Plus standard configuration): 1 × apron, 1 × blue tray, 1 × gallipot, 5 × non-woven balls, 1 × sterile field, 3 × non-woven swabs, 1 × fenestrated drape, 2 × pairs of Vitrex examination gloves, 1 × disposal bag (all latex-free).
  • All components configured to support aseptic non-touch technique for urinary catheter insertion.

Formulation

  • Sterile, single-use catheter insertion procedure pack for acute settings.
  • Non-pharmacological medical device accessory pack with no medicinal, immunological or metabolic mode of action.
  • Latex-free materials across pack contents as specified by the manufacturer.

Packaging

  • Supplied as a single sterile pack (unit of issue: 1) under SKU 908425/SINGLE via Medisave, corresponding to the medium Cath-it Acute Plus configuration.
  • NHS Supply Chain ordering details for the medium Cath-it Acute Plus: RHC code 908425, NHS code EHC1173, case quantity 40 packs per outer case.
  • Each pack is individually wrapped to maintain sterility until opened; outer labelling identifies Cath-it Acute Plus, size (medium), manufacturer (Richardson Healthcare) and relevant codes.

Usage

  • Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water and dry with a clean towel.
  • Open the Cath-it Acute Plus pack onto a cleaned working area, maintaining sterility of the inner contents.
  • Carefully unfold the outer wrapping to form an aseptic working area, touching only the outer corners.
  • Put on the apron and use the disposal bag supplied to organise components on the aseptic field and collect used items.
  • Position the disposal bag so it is easily accessible throughout the procedure.
  • Perform hand hygiene with soap and water or alcohol hand gel, then apply the first pair of sterile gloves from the pack.
  • Apply the aseptic fenestrated drape and modesty drape over and around the genitals, positioning them between the legs as appropriate.
  • Pour sterile saline into the gallipot if required, and cleanse the urethral orifice and surrounding area using the non-woven balls and swabs provided.
  • Apply a suitable sterile lubricant or anaesthetic gel to the catheter in accordance with the lubricant manufacturer’s instructions (lubricant is not included in the pack).
  • Discard the first pair of gloves into the disposal bag, perform hand hygiene again and apply the second pair of sterile gloves from the pack prior to handling the catheter.
  • Using an aseptic non-touch technique, insert the selected urethral catheter until urine flow is observed and continue to advance according to local guidelines.
  • Once the catheter tip is confirmed in the bladder, inflate the retention balloon with sterile water using an appropriate inflation syringe and volume as specified for the catheter (inflation fluid and syringe are not included in the pack).
  • Maintaining non-touch technique, attach the chosen drainage system (leg bag, night bag or valve) to the catheter outlet.
  • Dispose of all used materials (apron, drapes, tray, gallipot, non-woven items, gloves and outer wrapping) in accordance with local clinical waste policies.
  • Perform hand hygiene with soap and water on completion of the procedure.

Contraindications

  • Not to be used in patients with known hypersensitivity or allergy to any material contained within the pack, despite being latex-free.
  • Not suitable as a stand-alone treatment for urinary retention or incontinence; must be used in conjunction with an appropriate urinary catheter and drainage system following clinical assessment.
  • Not intended for use where a different specialist catheterisation technique or bespoke pack is required (e.g. some suprapubic or complex urological procedures) unless in accordance with local policy.
  • Do not use if the sterile packaging is damaged, opened, wet or past the labelled expiry date.

Adverse Effects

  • No direct pharmacological adverse effects are associated with the pack, as it contains only non-medicinal devices and consumables.
  • If aseptic technique is not correctly followed, use of the pack in catheterisation could contribute to catheter-associated urinary tract infection or local site infection.
  • Rarely, contact irritation or sensitivity to drapes, gloves or non-woven materials may occur in susceptible individuals.
  • Improper catheter technique (e.g. inadequate balloon inflation/deflation, forced insertion) can cause urethral trauma, bleeding or pain; these risks are related to the catheter procedure rather than the pack components themselves.

Storage Conditions

  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extremes of temperature or humidity.
  • Keep packs in their original packaging until the point of use to maintain sterility and protect contents from physical damage.
  • Avoid crushing or compressing packs, or storing under heavy objects that could compromise sterile seals or deform components.
  • Observe the manufacturer’s expiry date printed on the packaging and rotate stock so earlier expiry dates are used first (first-expiry, first-out).

Duration

Single-use procedure pack intended for one urethral catheter insertion episode; a new sterile Cath-it Acute Plus pack should be used for each subsequent catheterisation in line with local catheter-care protocols.

Onset

Provides all required supporting materials for catheter insertion immediately upon opening and establishing the aseptic field; clinical effect depends on successful catheter placement.
