Alcohol-free virucidal hard surface disinfectant spray
Description
Nilaqua Multipurpose Virucidal Surface Spray 500ml is an alcohol-free, non-flammable hard surface disinfectant designed for use in healthcare, food-preparation and domestic environments. Formulated with quaternary ammonium compounds (didecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride and benzalkonium chloride), it kills up to 99.9999% of germs, including Coronavirus, MRSA, C. difficile, E. coli, Salmonella, Norovirus and more, in as little as 30 seconds. The non-tainting, food-safe spray is gentle on most surfaces yet offers a long-lasting protective barrier that can keep surfaces bacteria-free for up to 30 days (validated on MRSA). It is vegan friendly, halal compliant, allergen free, and widely used in the NHS and professional settings.
Bnefits
- Alcohol free, bleach free and non-flammable, reducing fire risk and making it suitable where alcohol-based sprays are restricted.
- Kills up to 99.9999% of bacteria within around 30 seconds of contact when used as directed.
- Virucidal, sporicidal and bactericidal activity, effective against pathogens such as Coronavirus, MRSA, C. difficile, E. coli, Salmonella, Norovirus and NDM-1.
- Provides a residual protective barrier on treated hard surfaces that can keep them bacteria-free for up to 30 days (specifically demonstrated on MRSA).
- Non-tainting, tested food-safe formulation suitable for use in kitchen and food preparation areas.
- Skin-safe and non-irritating under normal conditions of use; can be handled without excessive drying or damage to the hands.
- Halal compliant, vegan friendly and allergen free according to manufacturer declarations.
- Non-corrosive and gentle on most hard surfaces, including worktops, door handles, equipment exteriors and toys.
- Highly cost-effective due to high efficacy, fast kill time and extended residual action.
- Made in the UK using 100% renewable energy, with strong independent test data and NHS usage, supporting sustainability and trust.
Indications
- Routine disinfection of hard, non-porous surfaces in healthcare environments (hospitals, clinics, GP surgeries, dentists, care homes).
- Surface disinfection in food preparation and catering areas, including kitchens, canteens and food-processing environments where a food-safe, non-tainting product is required.
- General-purpose cleaning and disinfection of high-touch points such as door handles, light switches, desks, keyboards, handrails and worktops.
- Decontamination of surfaces in schools, nurseries, offices, public spaces, gyms, retail premises and transport settings.
- Household use for cleaning bathrooms, toilets, kitchens and frequently touched surfaces to help reduce microbial contamination.
- Situations requiring rapid antimicrobial action and residual protection without alcohol or bleach (e.g. around vulnerable individuals, in flammable atmospheres or where odour/taint must be minimised).
Composition
- Didecyl Dimethyl Ammonium Chloride (DDAC) – quaternary ammonium compound providing broad-spectrum bactericidal, virucidal and fungicidal activity.
- Benzalkonium Chloride (BAC) – quaternary ammonium compound (C12–C14 alkyldimethylbenzyl ammonium chlorides) providing additional disinfectant action.
- Amines, C12–14 alkyldimethyl, N-oxides – amine oxide surfactant that enhances cleaning and contributes to antimicrobial performance.
- Aqua (water) – primary solvent and base of the formulation.
- Additional surfactant system (e.g. sodium ethylhexyl sulfate and non-ionic surfactants) to aid soil removal and wetting of surfaces (exact surfactants and levels as per current Safety Data Sheet).
- Minor excipients, pH adjusters and stabilisers as listed in the latest Nilaqua Surface Range Safety Data Sheet (SDS 605106) to maintain stability and performance.
- Free from alcohol, bleach, formaldehyde, EDTA, parabens, phosphates, phosphonates, added dyes and added fragrances, according to brand and retailer descriptions.
Formulation
- Ready-to-use, water-based, alcohol-free liquid surface disinfectant.
- Quaternary ammonium compound (quat)–based multi-active system (didecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride and benzalkonium chloride) providing broad-spectrum antimicrobial efficacy.
- Non-foaming or low-foaming spray formulation designed for direct application to hard, non-porous surfaces.
- Non-tainting and cosmetically neutral on most surfaces, tested and approved as food-safe for use in food-prep areas when used as directed.
- Non-flammable with very high flash point, allowing safer storage and use compared with many alcohol-based sprays.
- pH typically mildly neutral/alkaline and formulated to minimise surface damage while maintaining kill performance.
- Biocide-classified cleaning product; not a cosmetic or medicinal product and not intended for use directly on or in the human body.
- Supplied as a clear or slightly tinted liquid in a trigger spray bottle for even surface coverage.
Packaging
- 500 ml HDPE or similar plastic trigger-spray bottle with ergonomic spray head.
- Label includes product name (Nilaqua Multipurpose Virucidal Surface Spray or Nilaqua Alcohol Free Surface Spray), key claims (alcohol free, kills 99.9999% of bacteria, up to 30-day protection), instructions for use, safety information and regulatory statements.
- Available as single 500 ml retail / professional-use unit and in cases (e.g. 12 x 500 ml) for institutional purchasers.
- Part of a wider Nilaqua surface range which also includes 100 ml travel spray, 5 L bulk refill and pre-impregnated surface wipes.
- Outer shipping cartons used for wholesale or NHS supply, labelled with product details, batch number and expiry date.
Usage
- For hard, non-porous surfaces only. Do not use as a hand sanitiser or directly on skin, eyes or mucous membranes.
- Ensure the surface is visibly clean; if heavily soiled, pre-clean to remove gross contamination before disinfection.
- Shake the bottle gently if required and set the nozzle to the spray position.
- Spray the product evenly onto the surface from a suitable distance to ensure full coverage.
- Allow a minimum contact time of approximately 30 seconds for standard bactericidal action; for specific organisms or higher bioburden, follow any extended contact times indicated on the product label or technical data.
- For food-contact surfaces, either allow to air dry or, if local policy requires, wipe with a clean disposable cloth after the required contact time, ensuring the surface remains visibly wet for the full duration.
- For general surfaces, either leave to air dry or wipe with a clean cloth or paper towel after the contact time.
- Reapply after heavy use, visible contamination, routine cleaning procedures or according to infection-control protocols, even though the product can provide residual protection for up to 30 days on some organisms.
- Avoid spraying directly onto electrical components or screens; instead, apply to a cloth and then wipe if necessary.
- Wash hands after prolonged or repeated handling of the product, especially before eating, drinking or smoking.
- Always read and follow the most recent instructions and safety information on the label and in the product Safety Data Sheet.
Contraindications
- Not intended for direct application to skin, food or medical devices intended for invasive use.
- Do not use on surfaces that are incompatible with quaternary ammonium compounds (e.g. some sensitive coatings or materials) without testing on a small inconspicuous area first.
- Do not use on polished or untreated wood, natural stone or other porous surfaces without spot testing and checking manufacturer guidance.
- Avoid direct spraying onto electrical equipment, open flames, hot surfaces or live connections; apply to a cloth and wipe if necessary.
- Not suitable for ingestion; do not use as a mouthwash, inhalation product or in any internal manner.
- Individuals with a known hypersensitivity or allergy to quaternary ammonium compounds or any ingredient in the formulation should avoid contact.
- Always follow local infection-control policies and equipment manufacturers’ recommendations regarding approved disinfectants.
Adverse Effects
- Generally classified as non-irritating to skin under normal conditions of use, but prolonged or repeated contact may cause mild dryness or irritation in susceptible individuals.
- Eye contact may result in transient irritation, redness or discomfort; rinsing with clean water is advised and medical attention should be sought if symptoms persist.
- Ingestion may cause irritation of the mouth and throat, nausea or gastrointestinal discomfort; medical advice should be sought if significant quantities are swallowed.
- Inhalation of fine mists or sprays in poorly ventilated areas may cause minor respiratory irritation in sensitive users; ensure adequate ventilation during use.
- Any persistent, severe or unusual symptoms after exposure warrant discontinuation of use and assessment by a healthcare professional.
- As with all biocidal products, inappropriate overuse or misuse may increase the risk of irritation or sensitisation in a small proportion of users.
Storage Conditions
- Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
- Keep container tightly closed when not in use to prevent leakage and contamination.
- Do not freeze and avoid extreme temperatures which may affect product stability or packaging integrity.
- Keep out of the reach and sight of children and pets.
- Store away from food and drink, and from incompatible chemicals such as strong oxidising agents.
- Dispose of any unused product and empty containers in accordance with local regulations and recycling schemes; do not discharge large quantities into drains or the environment.
Duration
Not used as a fixed-duration treatment; it is a surface disinfectant applied as needed. Each application provides rapid antimicrobial action within around 30 seconds and a residual protective effect that can last for up to 30 days on certain bacteria (e.g. MRSA) under test conditions. In practice, surfaces should be re-treated after cleaning, visible contamination or according to local hygiene and infection-control protocols.
Onset
Rapid; laboratory testing demonstrates up to 99.9999% reduction of specified bacteria within approximately 30 seconds of contact on clean, non-porous surfaces, with virucidal and sporicidal actions achieved over the contact times stated in the test data and usage guidance. The residual barrier effect on some organisms persists for days to weeks, up to approximately 30 days under controlled conditions.
