Description

BD Saf-T-Intima Pink 20G x 1.0\ with removable PRN adapter is a closed peripheral IV catheter system designed for patients with difficult venous access, such as oncology and chronically ill patients. The device integrates a 20-gauge, 1.0-inch BD Vialon catheter with soft butterfly-style wings, preattached extension tubing and a removable PRN (port) adapter in a single, low-profile system. An automated safety mechanism fully encapsulates the needle after use to help minimise needlestick injuries and blood exposure. The BD Vialon biomaterial and integrated, flexible wings improve catheter stabilisation, help reduce mechanical irritation and can support longer dwell times compared with traditional Teflon catheters. The pink colour coding identifies the 20G size and allows quick selection in clinical environments. Each catheter is supplied sterile in an individual blister pack, with 25 catheters per box.

Indications

Peripheral intravenous (IV) cannulation for short- to medium-term therapy
Subcutaneous or IV infusion when using an integrated Saf-T-Intima system as clinically indicated

Usage

Verify product integrity and expiry date; do not use if packaging is damaged or expired.
Prepare and disinfect the insertion site according to local infection control protocols.
Prime the extension tubing and PRN adapter if required by local practice, maintaining sterility.
Using the butterfly wings for fingertip control, insert the needle and catheter into the vessel at an appropriate angle until blood return confirms venous access.
Advance the catheter into the vessel while withdrawing the needle according to manufacturer instructions.
Activate the automated safety mechanism to fully encapsulate the needle and reduce needlestick risk, keeping hands behind the needle tip.
Secure the catheter and wings to the skin with appropriate dressings and fixation devices.
Connect the PRN adapter to IV tubing, injection caps or other approved accessories as required, and flush according to protocol.
Monitor the insertion site regularly for signs of infiltration, phlebitis, leakage or infection.
Dispose of the used needle-containing safety device and all packaging in an approved sharps or clinical waste container.

Contraindications

Do not use in patients with known hypersensitivity or allergy to any component materials of the device.
Avoid insertion into limbs or areas with compromised circulation, infection, thrombosis, burns or significant oedema.
Do not use for arterial puncture or in locations not suitable for peripheral IV or subcutaneous access.
Do not reuse; single-use device only.

Infiltration or extravasation of infused fluids
Phlebitis or thrombophlebitis
Local or systemic infection if aseptic technique is not followed
Hematoma formation or bleeding at the insertion site

Storage Conditions

Store in original packaging in a clean, dry environment.
Keep at room temperature away from excessive heat, moisture and direct sunlight.
Do not use if the sterile package is opened, damaged or wet.
Observe the expiry date on the packaging and do not use beyond this date.

Duration

Intended for short- to medium-term peripheral IV or subcutaneous access; actual dwell time depends on clinical indication, vein condition and local vascular access policies.
