Drain Disinfectant Sachets

Description

Clinell Drain Disinfectant Sachets 30g (Box of 24) are single-use powder sachets designed specifically for disinfecting drains in clinical environments. When activated with water, the formulation generates peracetic acid in situ, producing a powerful blend of oxidative agents that penetrate and break down protective bacterial biofilms throughout the drainage trap. The product is more effective and gentler on drains than traditional chlorine-based treatments, delivers a >99.9999% reduction in bacteria, and prevents regrowth for at least 4 days. It is intended for use in sinks and shower drains, particularly in hospitals and clinics, as part of a simple, proven regime to control drain-based wet biofilms and reduce the risk of outbreaks linked to contaminated plumbing.

Bnefits

  • Targets and destroys established wet bacterial biofilms in drains, rather than just planktonic bacteria.
  • Uses peracetic acid–generating (PAA) technology that breaks down biofilm structure and kills bacteria within it.
  • More effective, and gentler on drains and pipework, than many chlorine-based treatments.
  • Provides a >99.9999% reduction in bacteria when used as directed.
  • Prevents regrowth of biofilms for at least 4 days, helping to reduce the risk of recurrent contamination.
  • Works at near-neutral pH and is tested for compatibility with common drain materials.
  • Simple, sachet-based format with measured 30 g doses for consistent treatment.
  • Supports outbreak prevention by addressing a recognised reservoir of healthcare-associated pathogens in sinks and shower drains.
  • Suitable for routine use, such as twice-weekly applications, without causing damage to drains under normal use conditions.
  • Convenient for a wide range of clinical settings, including hospitals, care homes, dental and aesthetic clinics where drain-based biofilms pose infection risks.

Indications

  • Disinfection of clinical sinks and hand-wash basin drains in hospitals, clinics and outpatient settings.
  • Disinfection of shower drains in ward bathrooms and patient washing areas.
  • Targeting wet, drain-based bacterial biofilms that can act as reservoirs for healthcare-associated infections.
  • Use as part of a regular infection-prevention regime to control biofilms in plumbing systems in high-risk wards (e.g. ICUs, transplant units).
  • Supportive measure during the investigation and management of drain-associated outbreaks caused by Gram-negative organisms.
  • Use in aesthetic and dermatology clinics to disinfect treatment-room sinks and shower drains that may be exposed to contaminated fluids.

Composition

  • Sodium percarbonate (≤55%) – oxidising agent that generates hydrogen peroxide and contributes to peracetic acid formation upon activation.
  • Citric acid (≤15%) – acidulant that helps generate and stabilise peracetic acid and contributes to cleaning performance.
  • Sodium lauryl sulfate (≤15%) – anionic surfactant to enhance wetting, penetration and soil removal.
  • Other non-hazardous ingredients and excipients in low concentrations to aid stability, dissolution and performance.
  • Peracetic acid is generated in situ when the powder is activated with water in the drain; it is not present as such in the dry sachet.

Formulation

  • Single-use 30 g powder sachets for drain disinfection.
  • Peracetic acid–generating oxidising formulation activated by contact with water.
  • Near-neutral pH working solution designed for compatibility with common drain and plumbing materials.
  • Non-chlorine oxidising system providing high-level biocidal activity against biofilms in wet environments.

Packaging

  • Cardboard carton containing 24 x 30 g Clinell Drain Disinfectant sachets.
  • Each sachet individually sealed to maintain product integrity and protect from moisture until use.
  • Outer packaging printed with product name, usage overview, hazard information, batch number and expiry date.
  • Inner sachets labelled with product identification and essential safety information.

Usage

  • Always read the full instructions for use (IFU) and safety data sheet (SDS) before first use and follow local infection-prevention policies.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment such as gloves and eye protection, as the activated solution is corrosive to eyes and irritating to skin.
  • Ensure the sink or shower drain is free from large debris or obstructions before treatment.
  • Tear open one 30 g sachet immediately before use, taking care not to inhale dust.
  • Pour the full contents of the sachet directly into the dry drain or trap as directed in the IFU.
  • Activate the product by running water into the drain according to the manufacturer’s instructions (for example, a measured volume sufficient to dissolve the powder and fill the trap).
  • Ensure the activated solution remains in the drain and trap for at least 15 minutes contact time to achieve full biofilm and bacterial kill.
  • Do not add other chemicals, detergents or disinfectants to the drain while the product is in contact, and do not mix with chlorine-based products.
  • After the required contact time, flush the drain thoroughly with water according to local protocol.
  • Use on a regular schedule (e.g. twice weekly per manufacturer guidance) to prevent biofilms from re-establishing; increase frequency in high-risk areas if recommended by infection-prevention teams.
  • Dispose of empty sachets and any waste according to local regulations for oxidising and hazardous chemical products.

Contraindications

  • Not for human or animal use; do not ingest or inject.
  • Not for application to skin, eyes, mucous membranes or wounds.
  • Not suitable for use as a general surface disinfectant or for medical devices; it is intended specifically for drains, sinks and showers as described in the IFU.
  • Do not use in combination with other drain chemicals, particularly chlorine-based products, strong acids, alkalis or other oxidising agents, as hazardous reactions may occur.
  • Do not apply to drains or systems known to be incompatible with oxidising agents without prior assessment.
  • Individuals with known hypersensitivity to any component (e.g. sodium lauryl sulfate) should avoid handling the product.

Adverse Effects

  • Contact with the activated solution can cause skin irritation (redness, dryness, discomfort).
  • Causes serious eye damage; splashes to the eyes may result in pain, redness, watering and potential corneal injury requiring urgent medical attention.
  • Harmful if swallowed; ingestion may cause irritation of the mouth, throat and gastrointestinal tract and systemic effects.
  • Inhalation of dust from the dry powder or aerosols from the activated solution may cause respiratory irritation (coughing, throat irritation).
  • As an oxidising mixture, it may intensify fire if in contact with combustible materials when in dry form.
  • Harmful to aquatic life with long-lasting effects if released in significant quantities into the environment.

Storage Conditions

  • Store in the original, tightly closed outer carton and individual sachets until use.
  • Keep in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place away from moisture and humidity.
  • Protect from heat, hot surfaces, sparks, open flames and other sources of ignition.
  • Keep away from combustible materials and reducing agents.
  • Avoid direct sunlight and temperatures outside the range recommended on the packaging.
  • Do not store near incompatible chemicals such as strong acids, alkalis or chlorine-releasing agents.
  • Keep out of reach of children and unauthorised personnel.
  • Ensure opened cartons are reclosed securely to minimise exposure of remaining sachets to moisture.

Duration

Applied as a one-off drain treatment with each sachet, typically used on a routine schedule such as twice per week. There is no fixed course; ongoing use is determined by local infection-prevention protocols and risk assessments.

Onset

Peracetic acid\u2013generating reaction and biocidal activity begin soon after the sachet is activated with water, with biofilm and bacterial eradication claims achieved after a minimum of 15 minutes\u2019 contact time and protection against regrowth lasting for at least 4 days.
