Single-use biodegradable drug round tabards
Description
Biodegradable Drug Round Disposable Tabards are single-use, red biodegradable polythene tabards designed to protect and clearly identify staff carrying out medication rounds and other priority tasks. Printed with a prominent “Drug Round in Progress – Do Not Disturb” message, they help minimise interruptions to nurses and clinical staff, reducing the risk of medication errors, improving the efficiency and accuracy of drug distribution, and enhancing patient and environmental safety. Developed by GV Health in collaboration with NHS Hospital Trusts, the tabards are suitable for use in general medical, surgical and SCBU wards as well as residential and nursing homes. Their single-size, adjustable fit accommodates most body types, and being disposable and biodegradable, they offer an economical and environmentally considerate alternative to reusable tabards that require laundering.
Bnefits
- Single-use, biodegradable polythene material helps reduce environmental impact compared with conventional plastics.
- Bright red colour with clear printed wording (“Drug Round in Progress – Do Not Disturb”) provides highly visible staff identification.
- Designed specifically for use by nurses during medication rounds to minimise interruptions from patients and other staff.
- Helps reduce cross-infection risk by limiting unnecessary movement and contact during drug rounds and other priority tasks.
- Reduces the risk of medication errors and improves accuracy of drug distribution by supporting uninterrupted workflow and focus.
- Improves efficiency and reduces time spent on drug rounds by preventing avoidable delays and queries.
- Helps lower the risk of staff entering general zones from high-risk or isolation areas without following decontamination processes.
- Economical solution – disposable tabards do not require laundering and are suitable for short-duration tasks.
- Single size with adjustable ties fits a wide range of staff shapes and builds.
- Suitable across a broad range of clinical environments including general medical wards, surgical wards, SCBU, residential care and nursing homes.
Indications
- Identification of nurses and staff on drug/medication rounds (“Drug Round in Progress – Do Not Disturb”).
- Use by infection control specialists or staff working on priority projects in high-risk or restricted clinical areas.
- Separation and identification of staff working in isolation zones and restricted zones.
- General use in hospital wards (medical, surgical, SCBU) to support safe medicines administration.
- Use in residential and nursing homes to mark staff carrying out medication rounds.
- Situations where reducing cross-infection risk and unnecessary interruptions is a priority.
- Short-duration tasks where a disposable, non-laundered protective tabard is preferred.
Composition
- Primary material: biodegradable polythene (Polycare blend of LDPE/HDPE with biodegradable additives).
- Colour: red, for high visibility on the ward.
- Front print: typically “Drug Round in Progress – Do Not Disturb” (wording may vary slightly by batch/supplier).
- Single-size, sleeveless tabard design with side/waist ties or fastenings for adjustable fit.
- Latex-free construction (no natural rubber latex components reported by major distributors).
Formulation
- Non-woven garment equivalent made from thin-gauge biodegradable polythene film.
- Flat-packed, single-use tabards engineered for short-duration wear.
- Designed as over-garment PPE to be worn over uniforms or scrubs.
- Biodegradable Polycare polythene formulation developed to reduce landfill persistence.
- Non-sterile, non-fluid-impervious general protective wear (not a surgical gown or respirator).
Packaging
- Supplied as 1 box containing 250 single-use tabards.
- Tabards are typically flat-packed within an inner dispenser box/carton for easy storage and access.
- Outer carton clearly labelled with product description, quantity (250), brand (GV Health/Polycare), colour and usage.
- Box weight approximately 4–5 kg (varies by distributor).
Usage
- Remove a single tabard from the dispenser box, ensuring hands are clean before handling.
- Unfold the tabard fully and place it over the head so that the printed message is clearly visible on the front.
- Secure the side/waist ties or fastenings to achieve a comfortable and secure fit over existing clothing or scrubs.
- Wear the tabard while performing drug rounds or other designated priority tasks to signal “Do Not Disturb” to others.
- Avoid using the tabard for non-designated tasks to preserve the clarity of the message and reduce confusion.
- After completing the drug round or task, carefully remove the tabard and dispose of it in an appropriate waste stream according to local infection prevention and waste management policies.
- Do not reuse; these tabards are strictly single-use items.
- Store remaining tabards in their original box in a clean, dry area ready for subsequent use.
Contraindications
- Not intended for use as a sterile barrier or as a substitute for clinical gowns or other fluid-resistant PPE where such protection is required.
- Do not use where flame-retardant protective clothing is required; material is standard polythene and may be flammable.
- Not suitable for reuse; reusing single-use tabards may increase infection risk and compromise identification clarity.
- Staff or patients with known hypersensitivity to polythene or related additives should avoid contact.
- Should not be used as the sole means of infection control; must be used alongside standard infection prevention protocols (hand hygiene, appropriate PPE, etc.).
Adverse Effects
- Possible discomfort or heat build-up when worn for prolonged periods, especially in warm environments.
- Potential for skin irritation, sweating or contact sensitivity in individuals intolerant to polythene films or additives.
- If worn incorrectly or obscured, the printed message may be less visible, potentially reducing the intended safety benefit.
- Improper disposal may conflict with local environmental or waste management policies despite the biodegradable formulation.
Storage Conditions
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and excessive heat to prevent degradation of the polythene material and print.
- Keep in original carton or dispenser packaging until use to protect from dust, moisture and physical damage.
- Avoid contact with sharp objects that may puncture or tear the tabards while in storage.
- Do not expose to open flames or high-temperature sources.
- Keep out of reach of unauthorised personnel and children.
Duration
Designed for short-duration use during a single drug round or specific priority task; each tabard is intended for a single session and must be discarded after use.
Onset
Operational benefits such as reduced interruptions, clearer staff identification and improved focus on medication rounds are realized immediately upon wearing the tabard in the clinical environment.
