Portable needle clipping and storage device for insulin syringe and pen needles
Description
The BD Safe-Clip Needle Clipping & Storage Device is a compact, portable sharps safety aid designed to remove and securely store used needles from insulin syringes and insulin pen needles. With a built-in metal clipping mechanism housed inside a durable plastic body, the device clips off the needle from the syringe or pen and automatically retains the clipped needle inside an internal reservoir, rendering the syringe or pen needle unusable. The BD Safe-Clip can hold up to approximately 1,500 clipped needles (around a two-year supply for many insulin users) and is compatible with needle gauges from 28G to 31G and needle lengths from 5 mm to 12.7 mm. It is intended for consumer and professional use as a convenient alternative or adjunct to traditional sharps containers, enhancing safety in home, community and clinic environments by reducing the risk of accidental needlestick injury and improper disposal.
Bnefits
- Safely removes and clips used needles from insulin syringes and insulin pen needles, helping to prevent accidental needlestick injuries.
- Automatically retains the clipped needle inside a sealed internal compartment, making the syringe or pen needle unusable after clipping.
- High capacity reservoir holds up to approximately 1,500 clipped needles, providing around two years of disposal capacity for many insulin users.
- Compatible with a broad range of commonly used diabetes needles, including 28G to 31G gauges and lengths from 5 mm to 12.7 mm.
- Compact, lightweight and portable design makes it easy to carry in a diabetes kit, handbag or pocket for safe disposal when away from home.
- Simple, one-step clipping action that is easy for patients, carers and clinicians to use with minimal hand strength or dexterity.
- Helps keep households safer by reducing the risk that loose, used needles will end up in household waste or recycling streams.
- Can support sharps safety in aesthetic, primary care and outpatient settings where insulin pen needles or similar fine-gauge needles are used, as an adjunct to conventional sharps containers.
Indications
- Safe clipping and storage of used insulin syringe needles in home, community and clinical environments.
- Safe clipping and storage of used insulin pen needles after subcutaneous injection.
- Use by people with diabetes and other patients who self-inject medications using 28G–31G needles of 5–12.7 mm length, to support safer needle disposal.
- Use by healthcare professionals in clinics, pharmacies, aesthetic practices and GP surgeries as an additional sharps safety measure when working with insulin and similar pen/syringe needles.
- Situations where a portable needle disposal option is needed when travelling or outside of normal access to larger sharps containers.
Composition
- Outer housing: robust, portable plastic body designed to be held comfortably in one hand during use.
- Internal mechanism: metal clipping/cutting assembly designed to sever the needle from the syringe or pen hub and retain it securely inside the device.
- Needle reservoir: enclosed internal compartment engineered to store up to approximately 1,500 clipped needles.
- Actuation area: external slot/guide into which the needle is inserted, aligned with an internal cutting mechanism activated by hand pressure.
- Materials: manufactured without natural rubber latex; intended as a non-sterile, single-reservoir consumer device for multiple uses until capacity is reached.
Formulation
- Non-sterile, reusable needle clipping and storage device with integrated metal cutting mechanism and enclosed plastic reservoir, designed for repeated clipping of 28G–31G, 5–12.7 mm insulin syringe and pen needles until internal capacity (approximately 1,500 needles) is reached.
Packaging
- Supplied as a single BD Safe-Clip device per retail pack when purchased from Medisave (unit: each).
- Consumer-style carton or blister packaging with BD/embecta branding, product images and usage information.
- Labelling typically includes product name (BD Safe-Clip Needle Clipping & Storage Device), capacity (up to 1,500 needles), compatible gauge and length range (28G–31G, 5–12.7 mm), manufacturer, lot number, and any applicable regulatory symbols.
- Outer shipping cartons used by distributors may contain multiple retail units for pharmacy or clinic stocking.
Usage
- Ensure the BD Safe-Clip device is intended for your type of needle (28G–31G, 5–12.7 mm insulin syringe or pen needles) and that it has not reached its clipping capacity.
- After administering an injection with an insulin syringe or pen needle, hold the device firmly in one hand on a stable surface.
- Insert the exposed needle carefully into the designated opening/slot on the BD Safe-Clip device according to the orientation shown in the instructions for use.
- Gently but firmly squeeze or press the device as directed so that the internal mechanism clips the needle from the syringe or pen hub.
- Confirm that the needle has been completely severed and that the syringe or pen needle hub is now needle-free and unusable.
- Dispose of the needle-free syringe or pen needle component in accordance with local regulations (it may still require appropriate disposal, but it no longer has an exposed sharp).
- Do not attempt to open the device or remove clipped needles from the internal reservoir at any time.
- Continue using the device until it reaches its approximate capacity (up to 1,500 needles) or becomes difficult to operate; then dispose of the entire device according to local sharps waste regulations.
- Do not use the BD Safe-Clip device with lancets or with needles outside the specified gauge and length range.
- Keep the device out of reach of children and pets, and follow any additional manufacturer instructions provided with the product.
Contraindications
- Not intended for use with lancets or other non-compatible sharps devices.
- Do not use with needles outside the specified size range (28G–31G, 5–12.7 mm), as this may damage the mechanism or fail to clip the needle safely.
- Not suitable as the sole sharps disposal solution in settings where local regulations require the use of certified sharps containers for all clinical waste; in such cases, Safe-Clip should only be used in compliance with local policies.
- Do not use the device if it is visibly damaged, cracked, broken, or if the cutting mechanism does not function correctly.
- Do not attempt to use the device once it has reached or exceeded its designed capacity (approximately 1,500 needles).
Adverse Effects
- Potential for needlestick injury if needles are not inserted correctly into the device opening before clipping or if standard sharps handling precautions are not followed.
- Risk of device breakage or malfunction if used with incompatible needle sizes or if excessive force is applied.
- Possible contamination risk if the device exterior becomes soiled with blood or body fluids and is not handled or stored appropriately.
- Inadequate sharps disposal protection if the device is used incorrectly or as a substitute for required clinical sharps containers contrary to local regulations.
Storage Conditions
- Store at normal room temperature in a clean, dry environment.
- Keep away from direct sunlight and extremes of heat or cold that could degrade the plastic housing or internal mechanism.
- Do not immerse the device in liquids or attempt to clean internally; wipe the exterior with a damp cloth or disinfectant wipe if necessary, following manufacturer guidance.
- Keep out of reach of children and unauthorised users.
- Do not store the device where it may be crushed, heavily impacted, or otherwise physically damaged.
