3-way stopcocks / infusion accessories

Description

Discofix C is a multidirectional, drug-resistant 3-way stopcock from B. Braun designed for infusion therapy and invasive monitoring. The blue C-3 version (REF 16494C) is a PVC-free, DEHP-free, latex-free three-way valve with a rotating male luer lock adapter and two female luer ports, providing needle-free access for infusion, injection, aspiration and blood sampling. The ergonomically shaped handle gives tactile feedback every 45° over a full 360° rotation, helping to ensure clear, controlled flow paths while reducing the risks of leakage, chemical and microbiological contamination, air embolism and medication error. Each stopcock is supplied sterile, single-use, and packed in boxes of 100 units.

Usage

Verify that the sterile packaging is intact and the product is within its expiry date before use; do not use if package is damaged or opened.
Connect the rotating male luer lock of the Discofix C stopcock to the vascular access device or infusion line using a compatible luer connection compliant with ISO 80369-7.
Attach infusion lines, syringes or other accessories to the female luer ports as required, ensuring secure luer lock engagement.
Adjust the handle to align with the desired flow path; use the tactile 45° detents to feel when ports are fully opened or closed.
Confirm correct handle position visually and by tactile feedback before initiating or changing infusions to avoid unintended mixing or interruption of medications.
Use the rotating adapter to reposition the stopcock body without twisting or stressing connected tubing.
Disinfect access ports according to local infection-control protocols (e.g. wipe with suitable disinfectant) before each connection or injection.
Use only with compatible infusion solutions and drugs that are not known to be incompatible with polyamide, polycarbonate or polypropylene.
Do not exceed the specified pressure resistance (up to approximately 2.0 bar) in pressure infusion or monitoring setups.
The device is single-use and sterile; after use, dispose of the stopcock according to local regulations for medical waste. Do not resterilise or reuse.
Change the stopcock in accordance with national and institutional guidelines for intravascular devices (e.g. up to 7 days of use as per CDC 2011 guidance when clinically appropriate).

Adverse Effects

As with any intravascular infusion accessory, potential complications may include local or systemic infection if aseptic technique and replacement intervals are not followed.
Air embolism or leakage can occur if connections are not properly secured or if the stopcock is mispositioned, damaged, or used outside its specified pressure range.
Extravasation or infiltration of infused solutions may occur if upstream vascular access is compromised.
Hypersensitivity reactions are theoretically possible in patients with known allergies to the device materials, although the product is latex-free and PVC-free.

Storage Conditions

Store in original, unopened packaging until use.
Keep in a clean, dry environment at normal room temperature.
Protect from excessive heat, moisture and direct sunlight.
Avoid mechanical stress (crushing, bending or impact) that could damage the stopcocks or sterile packaging.

Duration

Intended for short- to medium-term use in an infusion system; may remain in use for up to approximately 7 days as part of an intravascular setup, subject to national guidelines (e.g. CDC) and institutional protocols, or earlier if clinically indicated or if device integrity is compromised.
