Description

The BD Emerald™ Three-Part Syringe 3 mL is a sterile, single-use, latex-free hypodermic syringe without needle, designed for general aspiration and injection of medical fluids such as body fluids and medicinal substances. It features a clear polypropylene barrel with bold, easy-to-read graduations for accurate dosing, a green latex-free thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) stopper for smooth and leak-free plunger movement, and a robust, textured retaining ring and thumb rest that provide comfort and stability during use. The 3-piece design (barrel, plunger, stopper) minimizes dead space and helps reduce medication waste. BD Emerald syringes are engineered to reduce environmental impact by using less material than comparable syringes and are manufactured using 100% renewable electricity in BD’s facilities.

Indications

Usage

  • Verify package integrity and expiry date before use; do not use if packaging is damaged or the sterility barrier is compromised.
  • Select an appropriate sterile needle or compatible luer device according to the intended clinical procedure.
  • Attach the needle or device firmly to the luer slip tip, ensuring a secure, leak-free connection.
  • For aspiration: pull back the plunger slowly to draw the required volume of fluid, aligning the plunger tip with the relevant graduation mark for accurate dosing.
  • For injection: eliminate air bubbles by gently tapping the barrel and expelling air as required, then administer the dose according to institutional protocol and clinical best practice.
  • Do not exceed the 3 mL nominal capacity indicated by the graduation scale.
  • After use, without attempting to disassemble or reuse the syringe, dispose of the entire device (and any attached needle) immediately in an approved sharps or clinical waste container.
  • Do not re-sterilize, autoclave, or reuse the syringe under any circumstances.
  • Follow local, national and institutional guidelines for safe injection practices and sharps disposal.

Contraindications

  • Do not use if the sterile package is open, damaged or has been previously opened.
  • Do not reuse or re-sterilize; single-use device only.
  • Not intended for use with syringe pumps unless specifically confirmed compatible by the pump manufacturer (BD Emerald syringes are generally not designed for pump use).
  • Do not use for intrathecal, intra-ocular or other specialized routes unless specifically validated with appropriate clinical protocols and accessories.
  • Do not use in patients with known hypersensitivity to any of the syringe materials if such sensitivity has been clinically identified (e.g., to specific plastics or silicone oil).

Adverse Effects

  • Potential for infection or cross-contamination if aseptic technique is not followed or if the syringe is reused contrary to instructions.
  • Potential tissue injury, pain, bruising or bleeding at the injection site when used with a needle or invasive device.
  • Risk of air embolism if air is not adequately expelled before injection, especially for intravascular administration.

Storage Conditions
