Peripheral IV catheter (shielded / safety IV catheter)

Description

The BD Insyte Autoguard Shielded IV Catheter is a sterile, single-use peripheral intravenous catheter with integrated safety-shielded needle and BD Vialon™ catheter material, designed to improve vascular access while reducing risk of needlestick injuries. The built-in push-button shielding mechanism instantly encapsulates the needle after insertion. The catheter includes BD Instaflash™ notched-needle technology to provide immediate blood flashback for confirmation of vessel entry, and uses a soft Vialon™ catheter that softens in the vein for improved patient comfort and longer dwell times. Supplied as a box of 50 sterile units, this catheter is suitable for fluid/medication administration, blood sampling, and other IV therapy uses in clinical settings.

Bnefits

  • Push-button needle-shielding technology significantly reduces risk of accidental needlestick injuries.
  • BD Instaflash™ notched-needle allows immediate blood flashback for quick vessel access confirmation and may improve first-stick success.
  • BD Vialon™ catheter material softens in the vein, enabling longer dwell times and reducing risk of mechanical phlebitis.
  • Transparent hub and radiopaque catheter allow easy visualisation of blood return and placement under imaging.
  • Sterile, single-use design reduces contamination risk and supports standard IV practices for fluid, medication administration and blood sampling.
  • Available in standard gauge/size (22G x 1") and packaged as a 50-unit box — convenient for clinical settings.

Indications

  • Peripheral venous access for infusion of fluids and medications (including IV therapy).
  • Blood sampling and transfusion via peripheral venous catheter.
  • Use in inpatient, outpatient, emergency, ambulatory care and general clinical settings requiring safe IV access.

Composition

  • Catheter tube: BD Vialon™ proprietary biomaterial polymer (softens in vivo)
  • Needle: stainless steel, with notched ‘Instaflash™’ tip for blood flashback.
  • Hub and wings (if winged version): medical-grade plastic hub, transparent, radiopaque.
  • Safety mechanism: integral shielded needle with push-button activation and needle retraction/shielding.

Formulation

  • Single-use peripheral IV catheter (winged or straight hub variants)
  • Gauge: 22G; Catheter length: 1.00 inch (≈25 mm) for this model.
  • Safety-engineered design: shielded needle with push-button activation; notched needle tip for Instaflash™ blood return recognition.
  • Catheter material: BD Vialon™ soft polymer designed for improved vein compatibility.

Packaging

  • Sterile, single-use catheter units individually packaged in sterile barrier packs.
  • Box containing 50 units per pack.
  • Each unit labeled with product code (REF 381423), gauge/size (22G x 1"), sterilisation information and safety/disposal instructions.

Usage

  • Open the sterile package aseptically just before use.
  • Perform standard venipuncture technique to insert the catheter into a peripheral vein.
  • Observe blood flashback via Instaflash™ needle to confirm correct vessel entry before advancing catheter.
  • Advance catheter, then press the push-button to activate needle shielding, retracting the needle safely into the hub.
  • Connect IV administration set or extension set to catheter hub as per standard protocols.
  • After single use in a patient, remove and dispose catheter (including needle shield) in sharps waste in accordance with local regulations.
  • Do not reuse or re-sterilize.

Contraindications

  • Do not use if sterile package is damaged, opened or expired.
  • Do not reuse or reprocess the catheter or needle – strictly single-use.
  • Not suitable if patient has contraindication to peripheral IV catheterisation (e.g. local infection, damaged veins, severe coagulopathy, or contraindicated limb).
  • Avoid use if needle shielding mechanism fails or appears defective.

Adverse Effects

  • Possible local pain, bruising or discomfort at insertion site.
  • Risk of phlebitis, infiltration, extravasation or thrombophlebitis depending on catheter dwell time, vein condition, and infusion protocol.
  • Potential for allergic reaction if patient is sensitive to catheter materials (rare).
  • Risk of needlestick injury if safety shield mechanism malfunctions or user fails to activate retraction.

Storage Conditions

  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Keep inside original sterile packaging until use.
  • Do not store in humid or contaminated environments to avoid compromise of sterile barrier.

Duration

Not applicable (device for IV access; duration depends on IV therapy protocol)

Onset

Immediate \u2013 provides venous access upon successful catheter insertion and needle removal
