21G x 1\ safety hypodermic needle only with sliding shielding mechanism

Description

The BD SafetyGlide™ Needle 21 G x 1\ (model 305915) is a sterile, single-use, safety-engineered hypodermic needle designed for intramuscular and subcutaneous injections. It features BD Activation-Assist™ Technology and a sliding shielding mechanism that is activated with one hand immediately after injection, helping to protect clinicians and caregivers from accidental needlestick injury. The needle is 21 gauge, 1 inch (25 mm) in length, with a regular bevel, thin wall stainless steel cannula and a green, standard Luer hub that fits any ISO-compliant Luer syringe (Luer-Lok or slip tip). Intended for general injection use, the needle is latex-free and supplied as needle-only (no syringe) in boxes of 50 for professional healthcare environments, including hospitals, primary care, vaccination clinics and aesthetic practices.

Bnefits

  • Activation-Assist™ Technology enables fast, smooth, single-handed activation of the safety shield, making safe injections easier and more efficient.
  • Sliding shielding mechanism provides post-injection needle tip coverage, significantly reducing the risk of accidental needlestick injuries.
  • Needle-based (detachable) technology fits on any ISO-compliant conventional Luer syringe, supporting standardisation and SKU reduction across facilities.
  • 21G x 1" regular-bevel, thin-wall stainless steel needle offers reliable performance for intramuscular and certain subcutaneous injections.
  • Green colour-coded hub allows quick identification of 21G gauge according to standard colour conventions.
  • Regular bevel and BD needle technology are designed to provide consistent sharpness and patient comfort during injections.
  • Safety mechanism is designed to require minimal change from conventional injection technique, reducing training burden for clinicians.
  • Sterile, single-use, latex-free device supports infection prevention and reduces risk of latex-related reactions.

Indications

  • General intramuscular (IM) injections where a 21G x 1" needle is clinically appropriate.
  • Subcutaneous injections requiring a 21G needle length and gauge, in line with local clinical protocols.
  • Use in hospital wards, emergency departments, outpatient and primary care clinics for routine injections (e.g., vaccines, medications) as per prescribing guidance.
  • Use in environments where safety-engineered sharps are recommended or mandated to reduce occupational needlestick injuries.
  • Potential use in aesthetic and dermatology practice for IM or deeper injections when a 21G x 1" needle and safety shielding are appropriate and within local protocols.

Composition

  • Needle cannula: thin-wall stainless steel, 21 gauge, 1 inch (25 mm) length, regular bevel tip.
  • Hub: green polypropylene hub providing a standard Luer connection compatible with Luer-Lok and Luer slip syringes.
  • Safety feature: integrated sliding shielding mechanism attached to the hub, designed to cover and lock over the needle after activation.
  • Materials: sterile, latex-free construction; non-pyrogenic and designed for single use.
  • Sterilisation: supplied sterile (ethylene oxide sterilisation or equivalent method as per BD specifications).

Formulation

  • Sterile, single-use safety hypodermic needle only, 21 G x 1" (0.8 mm x 25 mm), thin-wall stainless steel cannula with regular bevel, green Luer hub and integrated sliding shielding mechanism with Activation-Assist™ Technology; compatible with standard Luer syringes for general injection use.

Packaging

  • Box of 50 BD SafetyGlide™ 21 G x 1" needles (needle only, no syringe).
  • Each needle is individually packaged in a sterile blister or peel-open pouch.
  • Manufacturer case configuration commonly 10 boxes per case (500 needles per case), depending on region and distributor.
  • Outer carton and individual packages are labelled with product name, gauge and length (21 G x 1"), reference number 305915, lot number, expiry date, sterilisation method, safety symbol and regulatory marks.
  • Medisave listing: BD SafetyGlide™ Needle 21 G x 1" – Box of 50.

Usage

  • Verify that the needle (21 G x 1", model 305915) is appropriate for the intended injection (route, site, patient size) according to clinical guidelines.
  • Inspect the sterile package; do not use if the blister or pouch is damaged, opened, or past the expiry date.
  • Attach the needle securely to a compatible Luer syringe (Luer-Lok or slip tip) while maintaining aseptic technique.
  • Draw up the prescribed medication into the syringe and remove any visible air bubbles according to local protocols.
  • Prepare the injection site (e.g., skin cleansing, appropriate positioning) in line with institutional procedures.
  • Administer the injection using standard IM or SC technique as clinically indicated, inserting the needle to the required depth and delivering the medication.
  • Immediately after completing the injection and while keeping the needle pointed away from yourself and others, activate the SafetyGlide™ sliding shield using the recommended one-handed Activation-Assist™ technique (e.g., pressing or sliding the shield forward with the finger behind the needle).
  • Verify that the shield has fully covered and locked over the needle tip; do not attempt to defeat or retract the activated shield.
  • Dispose of the shielded needle and attached syringe immediately into an approved sharps container; do not recap, bend or manually remove the needle.
  • Do not reuse; BD SafetyGlide™ needles are single-use devices.

Contraindications

  • Do not use in patients with known hypersensitivity or allergy to stainless steel or other material components of the device.
  • Not intended for arterial cannulation, spinal procedures or other specialised applications outside the scope of general hypodermic injection unless specifically justified by clinical protocol.
  • Do not use if the sterile package is damaged, compromised or expired.
  • Single-use only; reuse can increase the risk of infection, needle dulling, safety mechanism failure and patient or clinician harm.

Adverse Effects

  • Local injection site reactions such as pain, redness, bruising, bleeding or swelling, as may occur with any needle injection.
  • Risk of infection at the injection site if aseptic technique is not followed.
  • Potential tissue trauma, nerve injury or haematoma if injection site or technique is inappropriate.
  • Although the safety mechanism reduces risk, needlestick injury remains possible if the device is mishandled or the shield is not properly activated.
  • Rare allergic or sensitivity reactions to device materials in susceptible individuals.

Storage Conditions

  • Store in a clean, dry environment at controlled room temperature as indicated on the packaging.
  • Protect from direct sunlight, excessive heat, moisture and freezing conditions that may compromise packaging or materials.
  • Keep needles in their original cartons and sterile pouches until point of use to maintain sterility.
  • Do not use beyond the expiry date printed on the packaging.
  • Store securely in accordance with institutional policies, out of reach of children and unauthorised persons.
