Safety winged (butterfly) blood collection set with push-button needle retraction, 25G x 0.75\ with 7\ tubing and luer adapter

Description

The BD Vacutainer® Push Button Blood Collection Set 25G x 0.75\ with 7\ tubing and luer adapter is a sterile, single-use, winged safety blood collection set designed to reduce needlestick injuries and improve clinician and patient safety. Featuring an in-vein push-button safety mechanism, the device provides split-second, one-handed needle retraction while the needle is still in the vein, helping to minimise the risk of exposure to contaminated sharps without increasing patient discomfort. The 25-gauge, 0.75\ winged needle is connected to approximately 7\ of flexible tubing terminating in a standard luer adapter for attachment to BD Vacutainer® tubes via a holder or to other compatible collection devices. The dark/royal blue wing and hub colour identify the 25G size. Intended for routine venous blood collection and short-term infusion, the set is supplied as a box of 50 and is commonly used in hospital, laboratory, community and aesthetic practice settings.

Bnefits

  • Push-button, in-vein safety mechanism provides immediate needle retraction at the press of a button, significantly reducing the risk of accidental needlestick injury.
  • One-handed activation allows clinicians to retract the needle while maintaining control of the venipuncture site and attending to the patient.
  • In-vein activation is designed to occur without increasing patient discomfort and to minimise the risk of healthcare worker exposure to a contaminated needle.
  • Winged “butterfly” needle design facilitates stable needle placement and access to difficult or fragile veins, improving first-attempt success in many patients.
  • 25G x 0.75" thin-walled needle provides smooth venous entry and helps reduce patient pain and trauma, particularly useful in paediatric, geriatric and patients with small veins.
  • Approx. 7" flexible tubing with luer adapter offers versatile connection to BD Vacutainer® tube holders and compatible collection devices, supporting standardised phlebotomy workflows.
  • Sterile, single-use device supports infection prevention and compliance with sharps safety and blood collection standards.
  • Part of the BD Vacutainer® push button family with documented reductions in needlestick injuries compared with conventional or forward-shielding winged sets.
  • Suitable for both routine blood collection and short-term IV infusion where clinically indicated, according to local protocols.

Indications

  • Venous blood collection (phlebotomy) using BD Vacutainer® tubes or compatible collection systems.
  • Short-term intravenous infusion of fluids or medications when a winged set with short tubing is clinically appropriate and permitted by local guidelines.
  • Blood collection in patients with small, fragile or difficult-to-access veins where a 25G butterfly needle may offer advantages in comfort and success rate.
  • Use in high-risk environments (e.g., emergency departments, infectious disease units, critical care) where enhanced sharps safety is especially important.
  • Phlebotomy in outpatient clinics, hospital wards, laboratories and aesthetic/dermatology practices where routine blood testing is performed.

Composition

  • Needle: 25G (0.5 mm) x 0.75" (19 mm) stainless-steel winged needle with bevelled tip, designed for venous blood collection.
  • Safety mechanism: integrated push-button safety device housed within the needle assembly, providing automatic in-vein needle retraction into a locked shield after activation.
  • Wings: flexible polymer butterfly wings (typically dark/royal blue for 25G) to stabilise the needle on the skin and aid positioning and taping.
  • Tubing: approximately 7" (18 cm) of flexible medical-grade tubing connecting the needle assembly to the distal connector.
  • Connector: standard luer adapter at distal end for attachment to BD Vacutainer® tube holders or other compatible devices.
  • Sterility: device is supplied sterile, non-pyrogenic and single-use.
  • Latex-free construction to reduce risk of latex sensitivity reactions.

Formulation

  • Sterile, single-use winged safety blood collection set comprising a 25G x 0.75" needle with in-vein push-button retraction safety mechanism, dark/royal blue butterfly wings, approximately 7" tubing and distal luer adapter, intended for venous blood collection and short-term infusion.

Packaging

  • Box of 50 BD Vacutainer® Push Button Blood Collection Sets, 25G x 0.75" with 7" tubing and luer adapter.
  • Each set is individually packaged in a sterile peel-open blister or pouch for single use.
  • Shelf/case configuration from BD product literature: 50 sets per box, 200 sets per case (4 boxes per case).
  • Outer packaging is labelled with product name, gauge and length (25G x 0.75"), tubing length (7"), luer adapter presence, reference number 367335, lot number, expiry date, sterilisation method and regulatory markings including CE (in applicable regions).
  • Medisave supplies the product as a clearance item due to a short-dated expiry (e.g. 04/2025 in the context provided).

Usage

  • Verify that the product (25G x 0.75" BD Vacutainer® Push Button Blood Collection Set, 7" tubing with luer adapter) is appropriate for the patient and procedure before use.
  • Check packaging integrity and expiry date; do not use if the sterile package is damaged, opened or expired.
  • Open the sterile pack using aseptic technique and attach the luer adapter to a BD Vacutainer® tube holder or other compatible device if not pre-attached.
  • Apply a tourniquet, select an appropriate vein and disinfect the puncture site according to institutional protocols.
  • Grasp the winged set by the wings, align the needle bevel up and perform venipuncture using standard technique.
  • Once blood flow is established, connect and fill BD Vacutainer® tubes as required, following correct order of draw and inversion recommendations.
  • While the needle remains in the vein and after blood collection is complete, press the push-button safety mechanism to activate in-vein needle retraction; confirm that the needle has fully retracted and locked within the housing.
  • Withdraw the device from the patient and release the tourniquet; apply pressure and dress the puncture site per local policy.
  • Dispose of the entire used blood collection set immediately into an approved sharps container; do not attempt to reuse or override the safety mechanism.
  • For short-term infusion use (if permitted), follow local IV therapy protocols and manufacturer guidance, monitoring the site for patency and complications.

Contraindications

  • Do not use in patients with known hypersensitivity or allergy to stainless steel or any component materials of the device.
  • Not intended for arterial puncture, central venous access or long-term infusion; use only for venous blood collection and short-term infusion as per instructions and local policy.
  • Do not use if the sterile package is damaged, opened or expired.
  • Single-use only; reuse of the device increases the risk of infection, needle dulling, safety mechanism failure and cross-contamination.
  • Avoid use in sites with active infection, significant scarring, burns, oedema or compromised circulation unless clinically justified and according to guidelines.

Adverse Effects

  • Local complications at the venipuncture site including pain, bruising, haematoma, bleeding, or thrombophlebitis.
  • Infiltration or extravasation of blood or infusate if the needle becomes displaced or vein integrity is compromised.
  • Infection at the puncture site if aseptic technique is not followed.
  • Very rare risk of allergic or sensitivity reactions to device materials.
  • Potential for needlestick exposure if the safety mechanism is not activated correctly or if sharps handling protocols are not adhered to, though the push-button system is designed to greatly reduce this risk.

Storage Conditions

  • Store in a clean, dry environment at controlled room temperature.
  • Keep away from direct sunlight, excessive heat or freezing temperatures that could degrade plastic components or packaging.
  • Maintain products in their original boxes and sterile packaging until point of use to preserve sterility and protect from physical damage.
  • Do not use products beyond the expiry date indicated on the packaging.
  • Store in accordance with institutional medical device storage policies, out of reach of unauthorised persons and children.
