Safety winged blood collection set (butterfly needle)

Description

The Blue BD 23G Vacutainer Safety-Lok Blood Collection Set with 7\ tubing is a sterile, single-use, safety-engineered winged blood collection device (butterfly set) designed for venipuncture and the collection of venous blood samples for in-vitro diagnostic testing. It combines a 23 gauge, 3/4\ safety needle with soft, flexible wings, translucent 7\ tubing and a luer adapter, and is supplied with an integrated forward-shielding Safety-Lok protective shield that can be activated immediately after use with one hand. The light blue colour coding indicates 23G, and the translucent tubing allows clear visualisation of blood flow. This configuration is widely used in general phlebotomy and in aesthetic/dermatology clinics for blood draws (e.g. for pathology testing or PRP procedures). The product sold by The Crystal Pharmacy is a repacked presentation of 5 individually sterile BD Vacutainer Safety-Lok sets.

Bnefits

  • Safety-engineered device with an integrated Safety-Lok shield that can be activated immediately after venipuncture to help prevent needlestick injuries.
  • Forward-shielding mechanism locks over the needle tip and provides a visible and audible confirmation of activation when correctly engaged.
  • 23G, 3/4" (0.75") needle with flexible butterfly wings is suitable for accessing small, fragile or difficult veins, such as those on the hand.
  • Translucent 7" tubing allows visual confirmation of blood flow and helps monitor the collection process.
  • Luer adapter at the distal end enables connection to BD Vacutainer holders and tubes as part of a closed blood collection system, supporting sample integrity.
  • Single-use, sterile design reduces risk of cross-contamination and supports infection prevention and control policies.
  • Available in compact packs of 5, convenient for clinics, aesthetic practices and smaller services that do not require full manufacturer box quantities.
  • Part of the BD Vacutainer system, widely used and trusted in healthcare settings globally, with extensive training and support resources.
  • Device can also be used (according to BD IFU) with a syringe or for short-term IV administration (up to 2 hours) when institutional policies permit.

Indications

  • Single or multiple venous blood sample collection for in-vitro diagnostic examination in hospitals, clinics, laboratories and aesthetic practices.
  • Venipuncture in patients with small or fragile veins where a winged set (butterfly) and flexible tubing are advantageous.
  • Use as part of an integrated BD Vacutainer closed blood collection system with compatible holders and vacuum tubes.
  • Short-term intravenous administration of fluids or medications (up to 2 hours) when used in accordance with BD instructions and local institutional policies.
  • Blood collection in aesthetic and dermatology clinics for investigations or procedures such as PRP, where venous blood sampling is required.

Composition

  • Sterile, single-use winged blood collection set (butterfly) with safety shield.
  • Needle: 23 gauge x 3/4" (approx. 19 mm) stainless steel needle with regular wall, bevelled tip.
  • Tubing: approximately 7" (about 178 mm) length of flexible, translucent medical-grade tubing with internal lumen suitable for venous blood flow.
  • Wings: soft, flexible polymer butterfly wings for stabilising the needle during venipuncture.
  • Safety mechanism: translucent yellow Safety-Lok forward-shielding protective shield integrated near the needle hub.
  • Connector: luer adapter compatible with BD Vacutainer holders and other standard luer devices (as approved in IFU).
  • Materials: medical-grade plastics and elastomers, sterile and not made with natural rubber latex (per BD product family specifications).

Formulation

  • Medical device (Class IIa/IIb category in many jurisdictions), not a medicinal product.
  • Sterile, single-use, non-pyrogenic winged infusion/blood collection set.
  • 23G safety butterfly with 3/4" needle and 7" tubing, light blue colour coding for 23G.
  • Supplied individually sterile within primary packaging; The Crystal Pharmacy presentation is a secondary pack of 5 units.
  • Designed for use by trained healthcare professionals only.

Packaging

  • Manufacturer configuration: individually sterile-packed BD Vacutainer Safety-Lok blood collection sets (typically 50 units per box and 200 per case, depending on catalogue number).
  • The Crystal Pharmacy retail configuration: pack of 5 individually sterile Safety-Lok blood collection sets in secondary packaging for aesthetic and medical clinics.
  • Each primary pack is labelled with product details including gauge, needle length, tubing length, lot number and expiry date.
  • Outer cartons/secondary packaging include branding, quantity, storage conditions, sterility, single-use symbol and regulatory marks (including CE mark for EU/UK markets).

Usage

  • Verify that the package is intact and within the expiry date. Do not use if sterile barrier is damaged or expired.
  • Open the individual pack aseptically according to facility procedures. Keep the device sterile prior to venipuncture.
  • Attach the luer adapter to a compatible BD Vacutainer one-use holder or approved holder, or connect to a syringe if syringe collection is being used (as outlined in BD IFU).
  • Remove the needle sheath without contaminating the needle. Do not recap the needle after removal of the sheath.
  • Perform venipuncture by holding the butterfly wings between thumb and index finger and inserting the needle bevel up into the vein using established phlebotomy technique.
  • Once venous access is established, connect BD Vacutainer tubes in the correct order of draw, or allow blood to flow into the attached device as per local procedures.
  • Monitor the puncture site and patient throughout the procedure. When collection is complete, release the tourniquet (if used) and remove the last tube from the holder.
  • Withdraw the needle from the vein while maintaining gentle pressure at the site with clean gauze or cotton according to local policy.
  • Immediately activate the Safety-Lok shield using a one-handed technique: hold the tubing in one hand and use the thumb and index finger to slide the translucent yellow safety shield forward over the needle until an audible click is heard and the needle tip is fully covered.
  • Visually confirm that the safety shield is locked in place over the needle tip. Do not attempt to defeat or remove the engaged safety mechanism.
  • Dispose of the entire used device (needle, tubing, holder if pre-attached) into an approved sharps container in accordance with local regulations and facility policies.
  • For short-term IV administration (if allowed by local protocol and as described in BD IFU), prime the set with the prescribed solution, perform venipuncture using the wings, administer for no longer than the recommended time (typically up to 2 hours), then activate the safety shield and dispose of the device as above.
  • Always follow local infection prevention, sharps safety, and occupational health guidelines in addition to the BD instructions for use.

Contraindications

  • Do not use if the sterile package is damaged, opened or expired.
  • Do not reuse or re-sterilise; single-use device only. Reuse may lead to infection, loss of performance and needlestick injury.
  • Not suitable for arterial puncture or other non-venous access procedures unless specifically authorised by local protocols.
  • Do not use in patients, procedures or anatomical sites where a 23G winged needle is clinically inappropriate (e.g. where a different gauge or device type is indicated).
  • Do not use with non-compatible holders, tubing systems or infusion pumps not specified by BD.
  • Do not bend, cut or modify the needle, tubing, safety mechanism or connectors.
  • Use with caution in patients with bleeding disorders, those on anticoagulant therapy or with fragile veins, following local clinical guidance.
  • Do not use for long-term IV infusions beyond the maximum duration specified in the BD IFU and local institutional policies.

Adverse Effects

  • Local pain, discomfort, bruising or haematoma at the venipuncture site.
  • Bleeding or prolonged bleeding at the puncture site, especially in patients with coagulation disorders or on anticoagulant therapy.
  • Vasovagal reactions such as dizziness, fainting or nausea related to blood draw or needle insertion.
  • Local infection or phlebitis at the puncture site if aseptic technique is not strictly followed.
  • Very rare risk of nerve injury or tissue damage if the needle is improperly inserted.
  • Risk of needlestick injury to healthcare workers if the safety shield is not activated correctly or sharps safety protocols are not followed.
  • Potential for hemolysis or compromised sample quality if collection technique is poor, impacting laboratory results.

Storage Conditions

  • Store in a clean, dry environment at controlled room temperature, typically between 4°C and 25°C (or as specified on the BD packaging).
  • Protect from excessive heat, cold, direct sunlight and moisture.
  • Keep in original packaging until immediately before use to maintain sterility and protect from physical damage.
  • Do not place heavy objects on top of boxes or packs, and avoid bending or crushing the devices.
  • Observe stock rotation using first-expiry-first-out (FEFO) principles to ensure older stock is used before newer stock.
  • Store out of reach of unauthorised persons and children; professional use only.

Duration

Not a therapeutic treatment; it is used for the duration of a blood draw or short-term IV administration episode. Individual use per patient/venipuncture event typically lasts only a few minutes (or up to approximately 2 hours for short-term IV use if permitted).

Onset

Immediate mechanical function upon correct venipuncture and connection to a collection device; blood flow begins as soon as the vein is accessed and vacuum or pressure is applied.
