Manual aneroid hand gauge sphygmomanometer with thumbscrew valve

Description

The Welch Allyn Hand Gauge Sphygmomanometer – Double Tube with Thumbscrew Valve (DS-5602-189) is a manual, aneroid blood pressure device featuring gear-free DuraShock technology for long-lasting accuracy. Designed as a double-tube hand gauge manometer with a traditional thumbscrew air release valve, it is supplied with an adult one-piece Velcro cuff and zipper case. The soft, ergonomic hand gauge with jewel movement and laser-engraved dial delivers reliable, precise readings, while its shock-resistant construction helps maintain calibration even after accidental drops, supporting a lower lifetime cost of ownership in clinical practice.

Bnefits

  • Gear-free DuraShock technology helps maintain calibration longer than traditional geared aneroid gauges
  • Shock resistant design can withstand drops of up to approximately 30 inches and remain in calibration, reducing lifetime costs
  • Double-tube hand gauge configuration for use with compatible two-tube cuffs and inflation systems
  • Traditional thumbscrew valve allows controlled, precise air release during blood pressure measurement
  • Soft, comfort grip hand gauge enhances clinician comfort during repeated use
  • Jewel movement provides smooth operation and long service life
  • Laser-engraved dial face supports accurate, easy-to-read measurements
  • Supplied with an adult one-piece Velcro cuff and zipper case for convenient storage and transport
  • Part of the Welch Allyn DuraShock Gold/Silver series of aneroid sphygmomanometers, designed for high reliability in demanding clinical environments

Indications

  • Non-invasive manual blood pressure measurement in adults
  • Use in hospitals, clinics, general practice, occupational health, and other professional healthcare settings
  • Situations where a durable, portable, manually operated aneroid blood pressure device is required
  • Backup or alternative to automated blood pressure monitors in clinical practice

Composition

  • Hand gauge aneroid manometer incorporating gear-free DuraShock mechanism
  • Traditional thumbscrew air release valve integrated with the hand gauge and bulb tubing
  • Double-tube connection for cuff and bulb assembly
  • Laser-engraved dial face with calibrated pressure scale (mmHg)
  • Jewel movement for smooth, long-life operation
  • High-impact, durable plastic and metal housing for the gauge body
  • Adult one-piece Velcro blood pressure cuff with integrated bladder (double-tube connection)
  • Inflation bulb and tubing assembly compatible with the double-tube design
  • Zippered carry case (material typically nylon or similar durable fabric)

Formulation

  • Non-sterile, reusable manual aneroid sphygmomanometer
  • Double-tube hand gauge with thumbscrew air release valve
  • Adult one-piece cuff configuration intended for use with a stethoscope for auscultatory blood pressure measurement

Packaging

  • One Welch Allyn DuraShock hand gauge sphygmomanometer (double-tube, thumbscrew valve)
  • One adult-size, reusable one-piece Velcro cuff with bladder
  • Inflation bulb and double-tube assembly (as supplied in the set)
  • Protective zipper carry case
  • Manufacturer’s instructions for use (IFU) and warranty information

Usage

  • Before first use, familiarise yourself with the instructions for use supplied by Welch Allyn and any local clinical protocols for blood pressure measurement.
  • Inspect the gauge, cuff, tubing and bulb for visible damage, leaks or wear; do not use the device if any components appear damaged.
  • Select the appropriate cuff size for the patient’s arm according to the sizing marks on the cuff; using the wrong size may lead to inaccurate readings.
  • Wrap the cuff snugly around the patient’s upper arm at heart level, ensuring the artery marker on the cuff is aligned with the brachial artery.
  • Attach the double tubes to the hand gauge and inflation bulb assembly (if not already connected) and ensure all connections are secure.
  • Place the stethoscope over the brachial artery distal to the cuff edge, following standard auscultatory technique.
  • Close the thumbscrew valve and use the inflation bulb to inflate the cuff to the target pressure above the expected systolic level.
  • Slowly open the thumbscrew valve to release air at a controlled rate (typically 2–3 mmHg per second) while listening for Korotkoff sounds and observing the gauge.
  • Note the gauge reading at the appearance (systolic) and disappearance (diastolic) of Korotkoff sounds, according to your clinical protocol.
  • Fully deflate the cuff, remove it from the patient, and record the measurement in the patient’s notes.
  • After use, wipe the cuff, gauge and bulb surfaces with an approved disinfectant compatible with the device materials, in accordance with local infection-control policies and the manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Store the device in its protective case in a clean, dry environment when not in use, and arrange periodic calibration checks as required by local quality and maintenance standards.

Contraindications

  • Do not apply the cuff to limbs with intravenous infusions, shunts, severe injury, or compromised blood flow unless expressly directed by a clinician and according to local protocols.
  • Avoid use on patients with severe clotting disorders or those at high risk of bruising without specialist guidance.
  • Do not use if the device is visibly damaged, leaking, or fails calibration checks.
  • Not intended for invasive blood pressure monitoring or for use as a life-supporting or life-sustaining device.

Adverse Effects

  • Temporary discomfort, tingling or numbness in the limb due to cuff inflation.
  • Potential for minor bruising or petechiae, particularly in patients with fragile vessels or clotting abnormalities.
  • Prolonged or excessive inflation may cause pain or circulatory compromise; follow recommended inflation times and pressures.
  • Risk of cross-contamination if the cuff and device are not cleaned and disinfected appropriately between patients.

Storage Conditions

  • Store in a clean, dry area away from dust, moisture and direct sunlight.
  • Avoid exposure to extreme temperatures or humidity that may affect the gauge mechanism or cuff materials.
  • Keep the device in its protective zipper case when not in use to minimise mechanical shock and contamination.
  • Do not place heavy objects on top of the device or subject it to unnecessary impact or dropping.

Duration

Not applicable; this is a reusable diagnostic instrument used for the duration of individual blood pressure measurements and retained in service subject to routine maintenance and calibration.

Onset

Immediate; accurate pressure readings are available as soon as the cuff is inflated and the gauge is used according to standard auscultatory blood pressure measurement technique.
