Disposable adult ECG monitoring snap electrodes (foam, teardrop)
Description
Hillrom Adult Monitoring ECG Electrodes (reference 108070) are single-use, teardrop-shaped adult foam snap electrodes designed for general patient ECG monitoring. Each 1.5 inch (38 mm) electrode uses a conductive chloride gel on a polyethylene foam backing with a central snap connection, providing reliable signal quality for up to 72 hours of continuous monitoring when used according to the manufacturer’s guidelines. Electrodes are supplied in pouches of 10, with 300 electrodes per case, and are biocompatible, ISO 10993 tested and not made with natural rubber latex.
Bnefits
- Adult, foam, single-use ECG monitoring electrode designed for general patient monitoring applications.
- Teardrop shape and 1.5 inch (38 mm) size optimise skin contact area and secure placement on the torso and limbs.
- Conductive wet / hydrogel (approx. 7% chloride) provides reliable ECG signal acquisition and low impedance.
- Center snap (press-stud) connector is compatible with standard snap-style ECG lead wires.
- Designed for up to 72 hours of general patient monitoring when used in accordance with storage and use guidelines.
- Foam substrate offers flexibility and conformability for patient comfort during extended wear.
- ISO 10993 biocompatibility tested and not made with natural rubber latex, reducing risk of latex-related reactions.
- Meets or exceeds AAMI specifications for disposable ECG electrodes and industry monitoring standards.
- Convenient packaging (10 electrodes per pouch, 300 per case) supports efficient use in hospital and clinic settings.
Indications
- Acquisition of electrocardiogram (ECG) signals in adult patients during general patient monitoring.
- Short- to medium-term continuous bedside cardiac monitoring in hospital wards, step-down units and similar environments (up to 72 hours as per manufacturer guidance).
- ECG monitoring in peri-operative, emergency department, high-dependency and telemetry settings where snap-style electrodes are used.
- Use with compatible ECG monitors and patient monitoring systems that accept snap (press-stud) electrodes.
- Not specifically intended as a diagnostic resting ECG tab electrode (separate product 108071 is used for resting ECG).
Composition
- Substrate: polyethylene foam backing (adult foam electrode).
- Adhesive: medical-grade acrylic adhesive on the foam backing for secure skin adhesion.
- Gel: conductive wet / solid hydrogel with approximately 7% chloride for ECG signal conduction.
- Sensor: metal eyelet / snap (press-stud) connector at the centre of the electrode.
- Release liner: protective liner (typically PET or equivalent) covering gel until use.
- Biocompatibility: materials tested in accordance with ISO 10993; not made with natural rubber latex.
Formulation
- Single-use, adult foam ECG monitoring electrode with central snap connection.
- Teardrop shape, size approximately 1.5 in (38–38.1 mm) excluding the grip/snap area.
- Reference 108070: adult, foam, wet-gel / hydrogel adhesive type, general patient monitoring electrode.
- Packaged 10 electrodes per pouch; 30 pouches per case (300 electrodes per case).
- Intended application duration: general patient monitoring up to 72 hours in accordance with manufacturer’s storage and use instructions.
Packaging
- 10 electrodes per pouch (single-use, sealed packaging).
- 30 pouches per case for a total of 300 electrodes per case.
- Medisave clearance listing: pack of 300 electrodes with noted short expiry (e.g. 29/08/2023, now expired).
- Outer case labelled with product reference (108070), quantity, lot/batch number and expiry date.
- Supplied in shipping cartons by Welch Allyn / Hillrom and redistributed by medical-supply wholesalers.
Usage
- Verify that the electrodes are within their expiry date and that pouches and case are intact before use.
- Prepare the patient’s skin by ensuring the application site is clean, dry and, if required, gently shaved to improve adhesion and signal quality.
- Open the pouch aseptically and remove the required number of electrodes, avoiding contact with the gel surface.
- Peel the electrode from the release liner, taking care not to touch or contaminate the gel area.
- Place the electrode on the prepared skin at the recommended ECG lead positions, pressing firmly around the foam area to ensure full contact.
- Attach the ECG lead wire snap connector to the centre stud of the electrode, ensuring a secure connection.
- Monitor the patient in accordance with clinical protocols; replace the electrode if adhesion deteriorates, the gel dries, or according to local policy or the maximum recommended wear time (up to 72 hours).
- After use, gently peel the electrode from the skin; dispose of used electrodes and packaging as clinical waste according to local regulations.
- Do not reuse single-use electrodes; reapplication or reuse can compromise adhesion, signal quality and infection-control standards.
Contraindications
- Do not use on patients with known hypersensitivity or allergy to acrylic adhesives, hydrogel components or other electrode materials.
- Not indicated for paediatric patients; designed specifically for adult monitoring unless a clinician determines otherwise.
- Do not place electrodes on broken, irritated, infected or severely compromised skin unless clinically justified and closely monitored.
- Not intended for use as defibrillation (defib) pads or for pacing; dedicated pads must be used for those applications.
- Do not reuse; single-use only. Reuse may increase risk of infection and degrade signal quality.
Adverse Effects
- Possible mild skin irritation, redness or itching at the electrode site, especially with prolonged application or in patients with sensitive skin.
- Occasional contact dermatitis or allergic reaction to adhesive or gel components; discontinue use and select alternative products if reactions occur.
- Rare cases of pressure marks or minor skin stripping upon removal, particularly in elderly or fragile skin; minimise by careful removal and skin preparation.
- If electrodes are used beyond the recommended wear time or on inadequately prepared skin, poor adhesion may lead to artefacts or intermittent ECG signal.
Storage Conditions
- Store in a cool, dry place in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidelines (typically at controlled room temperature; avoid extremes of heat and humidity).
- Keep in original packaging until use to protect from dust, moisture and contamination.
- Follow stated shelf life (datasheets indicate shelf life between 18 and 36 months when stored under recommended conditions).
- Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pouch or case (Medisave clearance stock had expiry 29/08/2023).
- Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or sources of heat, which may dry the gel or degrade adhesive performance.
Duration
Intended for single-use application for general adult patient ECG monitoring with wear duration up to approximately 72 hours per electrode, subject to clinical judgement, patient condition, skin tolerance and local protocols.
Onset
Immediate upon correct placement and connection to ECG monitoring equipment; electrodes provide conductive interface for ECG signal acquisition as soon as they are applied and connected.
