Nursing / Lightweight Stethoscope

Description

The 3M Littmann Lightweight II S.E. Nurses Stethoscope in Ceil Blue (model 2454) is an entry-level adult stethoscope designed specifically for nurses and other frontline clinicians who need dependable acoustics at an economical price. It features a dual-sided, teardrop-shaped chestpiece with a tunable diaphragm on one side and a traditional open bell on the other, making blood pressure measurement and basic physical assessment easier. Weighing only about 118 g, it is the lightest of the Littmann adult stethoscopes, helping reduce neck and pocket fatigue during long shifts.

Bnefits

  • Lightest of all Littmann adult stethoscopes (approximately 118 g), improving comfort for clinicians who wear a stethoscope all day.
  • Dual-sided chestpiece with tunable diaphragm on one side and traditional open bell on the other for versatile basic assessment.
  • Teardrop-shaped chestpiece allows easy positioning under blood pressure cuffs and around bandages and body contours.
  • 3M tunable diaphragm technology lets the user hear low-frequency sounds with light pressure and high-frequency sounds with firm pressure.
  • Provides clear, reliable acoustic response suitable for blood pressure measurement and limited physical assessment.
  • Non-chill rim and diaphragm improve patient comfort during auscultation.
  • Soft-sealing Snap-Tight eartips create an excellent acoustic seal while enhancing wearer comfort.
  • Anatomically designed, adjustable headset optimises sound transmission and user comfort.
  • Ceil blue tubing (71 cm / 28") offers extended reach and a professional appearance ideal for nursing environments.
  • Backed by a 2-year warranty covering manufacturing and material defects.
  • Available with high-quality laser engraving from the distributor to aid identification and deter loss.

Indications

  • Basic adult cardiac and pulmonary auscultation as part of routine physical assessment.
  • Blood pressure measurement using manual sphygmomanometers in clinical and community settings.
  • Limited physical assessment and monitoring in hospital wards, general practice, outpatient clinics and long-term care facilities.
  • Use by nurses, nursing students, medical assistants, LPNs/LVNs, CNAs and EMT/EMS personnel for everyday clinical tasks.

Composition

  • Chestpiece technology: dual-sided chestpiece with tunable diaphragm and open bell.
  • Chestpiece shape: ovoid / teardrop design for easier positioning under blood pressure cuffs.
  • Chestpiece finish: metal/resin composite.
  • Chestpiece weight: approximately 47 g.
  • Diaphragm type: tunable diaphragm.
  • Diaphragm diameter: approximately 5.4 cm (2.1–2.12").
  • Diaphragm material: epoxy/fiberglass.

Formulation

  • Mechanical acoustic stethoscope (non-electronic) designed for adult assessment.
  • Single-lumen binaural tubing with increased wall thickness for adequate sound transmission in basic monitoring.
  • Tunable diaphragm on the large side: light pressure for low-frequency (bell-like) sounds, firm pressure for high-frequency (diaphragm) sounds.
  • Traditional fixed open bell on the reverse side for low-frequency auscultation when the chestpiece is rotated.
  • Performance rating of 6/10 on the Littmann performance scale, appropriate for entry-level use.
  • Latex-free construction with no natural rubber latex or phthalate plasticisers in tubing or other components, helping to reduce allergy risk.

Packaging

  • One 3M Littmann Lightweight II S.E. Stethoscope, Ceil Blue tubing, model 2454.
  • Soft-sealing eartips (large size pre-fitted) plus additional/alternative eartips (typically small soft-seal) in the box.
  • User instructions covering use, care, cleaning and troubleshooting.
  • Retail presentation box with Littmann branding and model identification.
  • Distributor-supplied documentation such as invoice and details of optional laser engraving if ordered.

Usage

  • Adjust the headset so that the eartips point slightly forward, aligning with the ear canals for optimal sound transmission.
  • Place the eartips firmly in the ears to achieve a good acoustic seal without causing discomfort.
  • Select the active chestpiece side by rotating the stem until it clicks into position; use the large diaphragm side for general assessment and the bell side for low-frequency sounds.
  • For low-frequency sounds with the tunable diaphragm, apply light pressure on the diaphragm surface (bell mode).
  • For high-frequency sounds with the tunable diaphragm, apply firmer pressure on the diaphragm surface (diaphragm mode).
  • Use the teardrop-shaped chestpiece edge to slide under blood pressure cuffs and between body contours as needed.
  • Whenever possible, place the chestpiece directly on the patient’s skin rather than over clothing to improve sound quality.
  • After each patient, wipe the chestpiece and tubing with 70% isopropyl alcohol wipes or a compatible disinfectant; do not immerse the stethoscope in liquid or subject it to high heat.
  • Periodically remove and clean eartips, and inspect tubing and chestpiece for cracks, stiffening or damage; replace components as required with approved Littmann parts.
  • Do not autoclave or expose the stethoscope to extreme temperatures or strong solvents.

Contraindications

Not publicly listed

Adverse Effects

  • Prolonged or excessive pressure on the skin may cause temporary discomfort or mild erythema at the auscultation site.

Storage Conditions

  • Store at room temperature in a clean, dry environment away from direct sunlight.
  • Avoid exposure to extreme heat (such as car dashboards, radiators) or extreme cold, which can degrade tubing and plastic components.
  • Keep away from oils, solvents and plasticisers that may damage or stain the tubing.
  • Ensure the stethoscope is dry and cleaned after use before storage.
  • Preferably store in its original box or a protective case when not in use.
  • Keep out of reach of children and unauthorised users.
