Microstream-compatible CO2 sampling nasal cannula (adult)
Description
The PRO-Breathe MS CO2 Sampling Cannula - Nasal - Adult - 2.1m is a single-patient, single-use nasal cannula and sampling line designed for Microstream-compatible capnography monitoring in spontaneously breathing adult patients. It connects to low-flow (50 ml/min) Microstream-enabled monitors to deliver a crisp, accurate end-tidal CO2 (EtCO2) waveform. The cannula incorporates a nasal sampling port, integrated filter to protect the monitor from contamination, and kink-resistant tubing in a 2.1 m length to allow flexible patient positioning in emergency, anaesthetic, recovery and procedural sedation environments. This Medisave listing supplies the product as a single cannula; manufacturer master packs are typically boxes of 25 under the PRO-Breathe MS range.
Bnefits
- Designed for Microstream-compatible capnography systems operating at 50 ml/min sampling flow, supporting clear and accurate EtCO2 waveforms.
- Adult nasal cannula format provides continuous CO2 sampling from spontaneously breathing patients without the need for intubation.
- Full PRO-Breathe MS range includes intubated, oral–nasal and nasal options to cover a wide spectrum of patient types and clinical applications.
- Innovative single-nostril nasal cannula designs with breathing bypass within the range offer fast, low-cost ventilatory monitoring in EMS and emergency care (where applicable).
- Colour-coded packaging across the PRO-Breathe MS range differentiates intubated vs non-intubated sampling lines and helps clinicians quickly select the correct item.
- Integrated 0.2-micron hydrophobic filter on all lines reduces the risk of moisture and contaminants reaching the monitor sampling cell.
- Long-term variants (with yellow connector and built-in Nafion dryer) are designed for use up to 72 hours while maintaining waveform quality and reducing condensation in the sampling line.
- Transparent, crush- and kink-resistant tubing helps maintain flow and allows visual inspection of the line during use.
- 2.1 m line length provides good reach from monitor to patient in crowded or equipment-dense clinical areas.
- Supplied sterile and intended for single-patient, single-use to support infection prevention and control policies.
Indications
- Capnography monitoring of spontaneously breathing adult patients via nasal cannula in operating theatres, recovery, intensive care, emergency departments and procedural sedation suites.
- Continuous or intermittent monitoring of end-tidal CO2 (EtCO2) to assess ventilation and respiratory status.
- Use in pre-hospital and EMS environments where Microstream-enabled monitors are employed.
- Situations where non-invasive EtCO2 monitoring is required and the patient is not intubated.
Composition
- Medical-grade, transparent PVC or similar polymer tubing for CO2 sampling line (approx. 1.0 mm inner diameter, 2.5 mm outer diameter as per PRO-Breathe MS common specifications).
- Soft medical-grade nasal prongs / nasal interface designed for adult patients.
- Integrated 0.2-micron hydrophobic filter housing within the sampling line to protect the monitor from moisture and particulate contamination.
- Microstream-compatible connector / luer fitting for attachment to the monitor’s sampling port.
- Kink- and crush-resistant tubing design to help maintain an unobstructed lumen.
- Long-term versions in the PRO-Breathe MS series additionally incorporate a Nafion dryer segment (yellow connector) to manage moisture and support up to 72 hours of use.
Formulation
- Single-use, non-sterile or sterile (depending on configuration) medical device accessory for capnography monitoring.
- Adult nasal cannula with integrated CO2 sampling lumen and distal filter section.
- Microstream-compatible sampling line designed for 50 ml/min sampling pump flow rate.
- 2.1 m total line length for both standard and long-term MS variants.
- Available within the PRO-Breathe MS Microstream-compatible range alongside other nasal, oral–nasal and intubated sampling line configurations.
Packaging
- Medisave listing: supplied as a single PRO-Breathe MS CO2 sampling nasal cannula (adult, 2.1 m).
- Manufacturer master packaging: typically boxes of 25 lines (e.g. PBMS06221 for long-term adult nasal, PBMS04121 for single-nasal short-term).
- Each cannula is individually packed in a protective pouch with product identification, lot number and expiry date.
- Outer carton (for box quantities) is clearly labelled with product code, description, Microstream compatibility, line style (e.g. nasal adult) and quantity.
- Colour-coded labelling distinguishes non-intubated nasal cannulae from intubated and oral–nasal lines within the PRO-Breathe MS family.
Usage
- Verify that the PRO-Breathe MS cannula is intact, within expiry date and appropriate for adult nasal use before opening the package.
- Open the sterile/protective pouch immediately prior to use using aseptic technique as required by local policy.
- Connect the Microstream-compatible sampling connector on the line to the capnography monitor’s sampling port, ensuring a secure fit.
- Position the nasal prongs gently into the patient’s nostrils, orienting them according to the cannula design (single or dual nostril) and ensuring patient comfort.
- Secure the cannula using the ear loops and/or under-chin slider, avoiding excessive tension on the tubing.
- Confirm that the sampling line is not kinked, crushed or trapped under bed rails or equipment and that the full 2.1 m length is safely routed.
- Start or confirm the capnography monitor’s sampling function, ensuring the pump flow is set to 50 ml/min as specified for Microstream-compatible lines.
- Observe the capnography waveform and numerical EtCO2 values to confirm that a stable, clear waveform is obtained.
- Monitor the patient and waveform continuously according to clinical requirements, repositioning the cannula if the waveform becomes unstable due to displacement.
- Do not attempt to flush the sampling line; if contamination, blockage or moisture accumulation is suspected, replace the line.
- At the end of use, remove the cannula from the patient and dispose of the entire line as clinical waste in accordance with local infection-control and waste management policies.
- Do not reuse; the PRO-Breathe MS CO2 sampling cannula is designed for single-patient, single-use only. Long-term lines (yellow connector) may be used for an extended period up to 72 hours per manufacturer guidance but must still not be reused between patients.
Contraindications
- Not suitable for patients who are unable to tolerate a nasal cannula or who have complete nasal obstruction.
- Use with caution in patients with recent nasal surgery, significant epistaxis, facial trauma or severe nasal deformity; alternative EtCO2 interfaces may be more appropriate.
- Not intended for use as the sole airway device in patients requiring assisted ventilation via mask or endotracheal tube (dedicated intubated sampling lines should be used in such cases).
- Do not use if the packaging is damaged, the cannula appears contaminated, or any part of the line or connectors is cracked, kinked or otherwise compromised.
- Not designed for use with non-Microstream capnography systems unless specifically confirmed compatible by the manufacturer.
Adverse Effects
- Minor discomfort or irritation at the nostrils from prolonged nasal cannula use, especially in patients with sensitive mucosa.
- Potential for low-grade pressure marks on the ears or cheeks if tubing is overtightened.
- If used inappropriately or in patients with nasal pathology, there may be an increased risk of minor epistaxis.
- Inaccurate EtCO2 readings and misleading waveforms may occur if the cannula is poorly positioned, if there is excessive mouth breathing without oral sampling, or if the sampling line becomes blocked or kinked.
- Very rare risk of hypersensitivity reactions to the cannula materials (PVC or other polymers) in susceptible individuals.
Storage Conditions
- Store in a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight and sources of excessive heat.
- Keep in original packaging until point of use to protect from dust, moisture and mechanical damage.
- Avoid compressing or sharply bending boxed sampling lines to prevent permanent kinks in the tubing.
- Do not expose stored lines to chemicals, solvents or disinfectant vapours that could degrade plastics or filters.
- Observe any temperature and humidity limits stated on the packaging or in the product literature.
Duration
Not a treatment device; for monitoring only. Short-term MS sampling lines are typically intended for single-use periods up to approximately 8 hours, while long-term MS lines with Nafion dryer (yellow connector) are indicated for use up to 72 hours, subject to institutional protocols and manufacturer guidance.
Onset
Immediate; accurate capnography waveforms are typically available as soon as the cannula is correctly positioned, connected to a Microstream-enabled monitor and the patient is breathing through the nose.
