Pediatric acoustic stethoscope

Description

The Welch Allyn Professional Stethoscope - Pediatric, 71 cm (28\) - Black (part number 5079-145) is a lightweight, general-purpose pediatric stethoscope designed for accurate auscultation in children. It features a stainless steel double-head chestpiece with a pediatric-size flat diaphragm on one side and a low-frequency bell on the other, a non-chill rim for patient comfort, and single-lumen latex-free tubing. Rotatable binaurals and interchangeable comfort sealing ear tips provide a customised, airtight fit for the clinician. The stethoscope is intended for routine cardiac, pulmonary and vascular assessment in pediatric patients and carries a 5-year warranty.

Bnefits

  • Pediatric-specific double-head chestpiece with diaphragm and low-frequency bell for versatile auscultation in children.
  • Stainless steel chestpiece and binaurals help intensify and clearly transmit body sounds.
  • Excellent for general auscultation, including cardiac, pulmonary and vascular sounds, and for detecting Korotkoff sounds during blood pressure measurement.
  • Non-chill chestpiece rim improves comfort for pediatric patients.
  • Single-lumen latex-free tubing supports flexibility while avoiding natural rubber latex exposure.
  • Rotatable binaurals and interchangeable comfort sealing ear tips provide a soft, yet airtight fit and allow customisation to the clinician’s ear canal.
  • Lightweight design helps reduce clinician fatigue during repeated use.
  • Backed by a 5-year manufacturer’s warranty, indicating long-term durability for professional clinical environments.

Indications

  • Auscultation of heart, lung and vascular sounds in pediatric patients.
  • Detection of Korotkoff sounds for non-invasive blood pressure measurement in children when used with a sphygmomanometer.
  • Use by healthcare professionals in hospitals, clinics, emergency departments, primary care and community settings for routine physical examinations of pediatric patients.

Usage

  • Before first use, inspect the stethoscope for any visible damage and ensure eartips are securely attached.
  • Insert the eartips into the ear canals so they point slightly forward, aligning with the direction of the ear canal for an effective acoustic seal.
  • Rotate the binaurals as needed to achieve a comfortable, secure fit while maintaining an airtight seal from the comfort sealing eartips.
  • Select the desired side of the chestpiece (diaphragm for higher-frequency sounds; bell for lower-frequency sounds) by rotating the chestpiece until it clicks into position.
  • Place the chosen side of the chestpiece firmly but comfortably on the patient’s chest or other auscultation site, ensuring good skin contact and avoiding placement over clothing where possible.
  • For pediatric patients, use appropriate pressure and position the chestpiece to minimise discomfort and encourage cooperation.
  • For blood pressure measurement, position the chestpiece over the brachial artery while inflating and deflating the cuff to detect Korotkoff sounds.
  • After use, wipe the chestpiece, tubing and eartips with an approved disinfectant wipe according to local infection control policy and manufacturer guidance; avoid immersing the stethoscope in liquid or exposing it to high temperatures.
  • Periodically check that all components, including eartips and tubing, remain secure and free from cracks or damage; replace parts or the stethoscope if performance is compromised.

Contraindications

  • No specific absolute contraindications for the stethoscope itself are listed by the manufacturer.
  • Use caution when applying the chestpiece over areas of broken skin, open wounds or painful lesions to avoid discomfort.
  • Do not use on or near patients or environments where the stethoscope materials are known to trigger hypersensitivity or allergic reactions in the clinician or patient, although the device is not made with natural rubber latex.
  • Not intended for use as a therapeutic device or for monitoring in environments requiring specialised, non-standard equipment (e.g., during certain imaging procedures where ferromagnetic materials are contraindicated).

Adverse Effects

  • Possible minor discomfort or temporary indentation at the auscultation site if excessive pressure is applied.
  • Potential ear canal discomfort or irritation if the eartips are incorrectly sized, inserted too deeply, or worn for prolonged periods.
  • Inadequate cleaning between patients may contribute to cross-contamination; adherence to infection prevention policies minimises this risk.

Storage Conditions

  • Store the stethoscope in a clean, dry environment at normal room temperature when not in use.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to extreme heat, cold, direct sunlight or solvents, which may degrade tubing or other components.
  • Do not tightly fold or sharply bend the tubing; instead, gently coil the stethoscope and avoid placing heavy objects on top of it.
  • Keep away from sharp objects or surfaces that could pierce or cut the tubing.
  • Clean and disinfect routinely according to manufacturer guidance and local infection control policies.

Duration

Not applicable; the stethoscope is a reusable diagnostic instrument used intermittently during physical examinations and monitoring, without a defined treatment duration.

Onset

Immediate; provides acoustic transmission of body sounds as soon as it is correctly positioned on the patient and used by the clinician.
