Usage
- Ensure the BD BodyGuard T or compatible T34 syringe pump is correctly loaded with the prescribed medication in an appropriate syringe (up to 30 ml) and connected to the infusion line according to local clinical policy and the pump’s instructions for use.
- Open the lockbox using one of the supplied keys.
- Place the loaded syringe pump into the lockbox so that the pump display screen and keypad align with the cut-out opening in the lockbox front.
- Route the infusion line through the designated slot or opening in the lockbox lid or side so that it is not pinched when the lockbox is closed.
- Close the lockbox lid fully and turn the key to lock, ensuring the lock engages securely.
- Verify that the pump display and keypad are visible and accessible through the opening and that the infusion line exits smoothly without kinking.
- Keep keys in accordance with local controlled drug and device security policies (for example, on a controlled drug cupboard bunch in institutional settings or issued to authorised community nurses).
- For any programming changes, authorised staff should unlock the box if required, make adjustments in line with local protocol and then re-lock the box.
- Inspect the lockbox regularly for signs of damage or wear and replace if the lock or structure becomes compromised.
Contraindications
- Not a medicinal product; no pharmacological contraindications.
- Do not use if the lockbox is cracked, damaged or unable to lock securely, as this may compromise security and safe use.
- Use only with compatible ambulatory syringe pumps (BD BodyGuard T and T34-type pumps) and syringes up to 30 ml as specified by the manufacturer.
- Do not modify or drill the lockbox, as this may weaken its structure or interfere with safe operation.
Adverse Effects
- No direct patient adverse drug reactions, as this is a non-sterile hardware accessory.
- Potential indirect risks if used incorrectly, such as difficulty accessing the pump in an emergency if keys are not readily available, or if the infusion line is trapped or kinked when closing the lockbox.
- Risk of device damage or compromised security if the lockbox is dropped, heavily impacted or subjected to inappropriate cleaning agents.
Storage Conditions
- Store the lockbox in a clean, dry environment when not in use.
- Avoid exposure to excessive heat, direct sunlight for prolonged periods or corrosive chemicals that may degrade the plastic or lock mechanism.
- Clean according to local infection prevention and control policies using compatible cleaning agents that do not damage clear plastics.
- Do not autoclave unless the manufacturer specifically confirms suitability; check manufacturer instructions before subjecting to high-temperature processes.
