Vital signs monitor
Description
The Welch Allyn Connex Spot Monitor with SureBP non-invasive blood pressure, Covidien (Nellcor) SpO2 and Braun ThermoScan PRO 6000 ear thermometry (Plug 4 configuration, SKU 74CE-4) is a connected vital signs monitor designed for spot-checking and interval monitoring in hospitals, clinics and primary care. It features an intuitive colour touchscreen and captures accurate, automated blood pressure, oxygen saturation and temperature measurements, with optional Early Warning Score (EWS) capabilities to support rapid identification of patient deterioration. Integrated connectivity (WiFi, Ethernet, Bluetooth and Bluetooth Low Energy, depending on configuration) enables direct transfer of vitals to the electronic medical record (EMR), improving documentation accuracy and workflow efficiency. The system is compatible with a wide range of Welch Allyn FlexiPort blood pressure cuffs and Covidien/Nellcor sensors and includes Braun ThermoScan PRO 6000 thermometry for fast, reliable ear temperature readings.

Usage
- Charge the device fully before first use and connect the AC power supply as required.
- Power on the Connex Spot Monitor and, if enabled, log in using single sign-on or user credentials.
- Attach an appropriate Welch Allyn FlexiPort blood pressure cuff to the patient and to the monitor’s NIBP port, ensuring correct cuff size and placement.
- Connect the Covidien/Nellcor SpO2 sensor to the monitor and apply the sensor correctly to the patient (e.g. finger clip on a clean, perfused finger).
- For temperature measurement, follow Braun ThermoScan PRO 6000 instructions: fit a new probe cover, position the probe in the ear canal and start the reading from the monitor or thermometer handle.
- Select the desired workflow mode on the touchscreen (spot-check, interval monitoring or other configured mode).
- Initiate NIBP measurements using the on-screen controls; use BP averaging where appropriate for hypertension assessment.
- Review readings on the display and confirm correct patient association; ensure data are transmitted to the EMR if connected.
- Enter additional observations, modifiers or height, weight and BMI using connected scales or manual entry, as required by local protocol.
- Clean and disinfect the device and accessories between patients according to the manufacturer’s directions for use and infection control guidelines.
Contraindications
- Do not use the device or specific modules on patients for whom non-invasive blood pressure, pulse oximetry or tympanic temperature measurement is contraindicated according to clinical judgement.
- Do not place the blood pressure cuff on limbs with intravenous lines, arterial lines, shunts or areas of compromised circulation unless directed by a clinician.
- Avoid using the Braun ThermoScan PRO 6000 in ears with active infection, significant cerumen obstruction or after ear surgery, unless specifically advised by a physician.
- Do not use the device in the presence of flammable anaesthetics or in environments where explosion hazards exist.
- Patients connected to other electrical medical equipment must be managed in accordance with relevant safety standards and manufacturer guidance.
Adverse Effects
- Temporary discomfort, pressure or minor bruising at the cuff site from repeated or prolonged blood pressure measurements.
- Reddening or irritation at SpO2 sensor sites, particularly with prolonged continuous monitoring or in patients with sensitive skin; reposition sensors regularly as per guidelines.
- Mild discomfort during tympanic temperature measurement in some patients.
- Incorrect application or use contrary to the instructions for use may result in inaccurate readings, potential misinterpretation of patient status and delayed recognition of deterioration.
Storage Conditions
- Store and operate the monitor within the environmental ranges specified in the directions for use (typically a controlled indoor clinical environment).
- Keep the device in a clean, dry area away from excessive dust, moisture and direct sunlight when not in use.
- Avoid exposing the monitor to extreme temperatures, shock or vibration.
- Ensure the rechargeable battery is maintained according to manufacturer recommendations if the device is stored for extended periods.
- Store accessories such as cuffs, sensors and probe covers according to their individual instructions.
Duration
Used for short, intermittent spot-checks or programmed interval monitoring sessions according to clinical protocol; the monitor is designed for continuous service in a clinical environment rather than a fixed course of treatment.
