Couch Steps / Patient Access Steps

Description

The Plinth Medical Double Couch Step is a strong, powder-coated two-tier step designed to help patients safely mount and dismount examination and treatment couches. It features an anti-slip tread on each step and rubber feet to prevent movement on smooth clinical floors. With a compact footprint and two step heights (185 mm and 310 mm), it provides stable, secure access support in hospitals, clinics and treatment rooms.

Bnefits

  • Strong powder-coated steel construction provides stability and durability in busy clinical environments.
  • Double-tier design with two step heights (185 mm and 310 mm) improves accessibility for a wide range of patients.
  • Anti-slip step surfaces help reduce the risk of slipping when patients step up or down.
  • Rubber feet help prevent movement and protect floor surfaces, enhancing safety on smooth or hard floors.
  • Compact size allows easy positioning next to examination couches without taking excessive floor space.
  • Designed as a couch accessory to improve patient access, particularly useful for elderly or mobility-impaired patients.
  • Simple, maintenance-light design with easy-to-clean surfaces suitable for infection-control protocols.

Indications

  • Assisting patients to mount and dismount examination, treatment or therapy couches safely.
  • Use in hospitals, clinics, GP surgeries, physiotherapy departments and other healthcare facilities where couch access needs to be improved.
  • Particularly helpful for patients with limited mobility, shorter stature, or balance difficulties when climbing onto standard-height couches.

Composition

  • Powder-coated metal frame and step structure (typically steel) providing rigidity and corrosion resistance.
  • Anti-slip tread surfaces on each step for improved grip underfoot.
  • Rubber feet on the base to reduce movement and protect flooring.

Formulation

  • Non-powered, fixed double-step unit for patient access to couches.
  • Two step levels integrated into a single welded frame.
  • Non-sterile, reusable medical furniture accessory.

Packaging

  • Supplied as a single assembled double couch step unit.
  • Indicative retail price from Medisave UK: approximately £337.99 (subject to change).
  • Dimensions of step unit: 450 mm wide, 490 mm deep, 185 mm high (first step) and 310 mm high (second step).

Usage

  • Place the double couch step on a flat, stable surface adjacent to the examination or treatment couch.
  • Ensure all rubber feet are in full contact with the floor and that the step does not rock or slide before patient use.
  • Position the step so that patients can step up facing the couch, using nearby supports (e.g. couch edges or handrails) as available and appropriate.
  • Assist patients with reduced mobility or balance according to local manual-handling protocols.
  • After use, wipe down and disinfect the step surfaces in line with the facility’s infection-prevention and cleaning procedures.
  • Periodically check the step for signs of damage, loose components or excessive wear to anti-slip surfaces and rubber feet; remove from service if safety is compromised.

Contraindications

  • Not suitable for use on uneven, unstable or heavily sloped floors where the step cannot sit firmly.
  • Should not be used if the frame, anti-slip surfaces or rubber feet are damaged, loose or excessively worn.
  • Not designed as a load-bearing platform for equipment or for use as a general ladder or step stool outside its intended clinical purpose.

Adverse Effects

  • Risk of slips, trips or falls if the step is placed on an unstable surface or if anti-slip treads are contaminated, wet or worn.
  • Potential for tipping if used incorrectly, such as stepping only on the edge or side of the step rather than the full tread.
  • Possible floor marking if rubber feet become damaged or if the unit is dragged rather than lifted when repositioning.

Storage Conditions

  • Store indoors in a dry environment when not in use to prevent corrosion and degradation of rubber feet.
  • Keep away from sources of excessive moisture, chemicals or heat that could affect the powder-coated finish or rubber components.
  • When storing multiple units, avoid stacking in a way that could deform or damage the step structure or treads.

Duration

Intended for ongoing, repeated use as a durable item of clinical furniture; lifespan depends on frequency of use and maintenance.

Onset

Provides immediate access support and height assistance as soon as it is positioned next to the couch.
