Description

The Plinth Medical Gynae/ GP practice couch (Hydraulic), model 93P, is a traditional gynaecology and general practice couch featuring a tilting seat, chrome stirrups and stainless-steel tray to provide ideal patient comfort and positioning for gynaecological procedures in busy practices. UK manufactured and built around a robust hydraulic lift system, the couch offers a height range of approximately 52–101 cm, a length of 180 cm and width of 63 cm, with a safe working load of 250 kg. The multi-purpose design allows the couch to be used for both specialist gynaecological work and general examination, and with additional accessories it can serve as a competent operating or recovery table. It includes a breathing hole, retractable castors, hoist clearance of 130 mm and is upholstered in hardwearing, anti-microbial, fire-retardant vinyl over comfort foam. The couch is designed for long service life, with a lifetime frame and 5-year parts guarantee and a typical lifespan of around 16 years.

Usage

  • Install the couch on a level, stable floor surface capable of supporting the combined weight of the couch and maximum patient load.
  • Before first use, check all moving parts, hydraulic operation, stirrups, tray and castors for correct function and security.
  • Use foot-operated hydraulic control to raise or lower the couch smoothly to a safe working height before and during patient positioning.
  • Adjust the tilting seat and backrest (where provided) to achieve optimal positioning for gynaecological procedures or general examinations.
  • Position and secure the gynae stirrups to support the patient’s legs; ensure patient comfort and adequate support before commencing any procedure.
  • Slide the stainless-steel tray into position beneath the pelvic area when required and remove it for cleaning after use.
  • Use retractable castors to move the couch when necessary; ensure castors are locked and the couch is stable before patient mounting or any procedure.
  • Assist the patient on and off the couch, particularly when it is set at a higher examination height.
  • Clean the vinyl upholstery, stirrups, tray and frame between patients using approved disinfectants compatible with anti-microbial vinyl and metal surfaces.
  • Conduct periodic inspection and maintenance in line with Plinth Medical’s recommendations, including checking hydraulic operation, fasteners, castors and upholstery condition.

Contraindications

  • Do not use the couch with patients whose weight exceeds the stated safe working load of 250 kg.
  • Do not use if there is visible structural damage, instability, or malfunction of the hydraulic system, castors, stirrups or tray.
  • Avoid use in environments with floor conditions or space constraints that prevent safe couch positioning and hoist access.
  • Use specialist judgement when employing steep tilt or lithotomy positions in patients where such positioning may be clinically contraindicated (e.g., certain cardiovascular, respiratory or spinal conditions).

Adverse Effects

  • Potential discomfort or musculoskeletal strain for patients if positioning, tilt or stirrups are not adjusted correctly or if procedures are prolonged.
  • Risk of falls or slips when patients mount or dismount the couch, particularly at elevated heights, if not adequately assisted.
  • Risk of entrapment or minor pinch injuries around moving joints or mechanisms if limbs or objects are placed inappropriately during adjustment.
  • Risk of staff manual-handling injuries if the couch is moved or adjusted incorrectly or if hoist access is not used where appropriate.

Storage Conditions

  • Intended for permanent in-room installation; store and use indoors in a dry clinical environment.
  • Keep away from excessive moisture, corrosive substances and extreme temperatures that could damage hydraulic components, metalwork or upholstery.
  • Ensure adequate clearance around the couch for safe patient access, staff movement and hoist use.
  • Clean and disinfect upholstery and metal surfaces regularly; avoid harsh solvents or abrasives that could degrade the anti-microbial vinyl or finishes.
  • If the couch is unused for extended periods, keep it in a neutral flat position with hydraulic system depressurised as recommended by the manufacturer.

Duration

Not directly applicable; the couch is used for the duration of examinations or procedures, typically from a few minutes to around an hour depending on clinical need.
