Hydraulic neurology / Bobath couch (2-section)
Description
The Plinth 2000 Neurology Couch - 2 Section Hydraulic (Plinth Medical Model 40H) is a wide Bobath-style neurology couch developed in conjunction with the Bobath Centre in London for neurological assessment and treatment of adults and children. The couch provides an exceptionally firm and stable treatment surface large enough to support both patient and therapist for a wide range of Bobath and neuro-rehabilitation techniques. With a width of 102 cm and a variable hydraulic height range from approximately 42 cm to 91 cm, it facilitates safe transfers, low-level work and comfortable therapist posture in hospital gyms and physiotherapy departments. UK-designed and manufactured, the Model 40 neurology couch features a very strong and rigid frame, adjustable angle backrest, breathing hole and plug, hardwearing antimicrobial vinyl upholstery, retractable heavy-duty twin-wheel castor base and hoist clearance of around 14 cm. Manufacturer datasheets specify a safe working load and lifting capacity of up to 250 kg for the hydraulic version (and 320 kg for the electric version), with an average service life of around 16 years, lifetime frame and 5-year parts guarantee, and a broad range of accessories and colour options.
Bnefits
- Provides a large, very stable Bobath-style treatment surface designed specifically for neurological assessment and rehabilitation.
- 102 cm wide top supports both patient and therapist on the couch for facilitated movement and handling techniques.
- Hydraulic variable-height adjustment (approx. 42–91 cm) allows safer transfers at low height and optimal working height for therapists.
- Strong, rigid steel frame and high safe working load (up to 250 kg on hydraulic models) enable treatment of heavier and more dependent patients.
- Adjustable backrest section allows supported sitting and semi-reclined positions for assessments and treatments.
- Breathing hole and plug enable comfortable prone positioning where required.
- Hardwearing antimicrobial vinyl upholstery supports infection control and withstands intensive clinical use.
- Retractable heavy-duty twin-wheel castor base provides easy mobility when required and stable positioning during treatment.
- Hoist clearance of around 140 mm allows access for many mobile hoists, supporting safe patient handling.
- UK-manufactured with lifetime frame guarantee, 5-year parts guarantee and a typical 16-year lifespan, offering long-term value and reliability.
Indications
- Neurological assessment and treatment of adults and children in accordance with Bobath and similar rehabilitation approaches.
- Physiotherapy and neuro-rehabilitation in hospital gyms, inpatient wards, outpatient clinics and rehabilitation centres.
- Therapy sessions requiring a wide, firm surface for rolling, turning, facilitation and other whole-body movement techniques.
- Use with patients who require therapist support on the couch alongside them during treatment.
- Clinical environments requiring a bariatric-capable neurology couch with high safe working load and robust construction.
Composition
- Heavy-duty steel frame engineered to provide a high safe working load and long service life (up to 250 kg safe working load and lifting capacity for the hydraulic Model 40H; electric Model 40E rated up to 320 kg).
- Two-section upholstered top with a large main section and adjustable backrest section.
- High-density comfort foam padding providing a firm yet comfortable treatment surface.
- Hardwearing, fully washable, antimicrobial and flame-retardant vinyl upholstery (multi-colour range including Atlantic Blue, Wasabi, etc.).
- Hydraulic lift mechanism for variable-height operation, foot-operated for hands-free adjustment.
- Retractable heavy-duty twin-wheel castor base with central braking for mobility and stability.
- Frame design with hoist access aperture providing approximately 14 cm hoist clearance.

Usage
- Install the couch on a firm, level floor in the treatment area, ensuring enough space around all sides for therapist access and hoist use.
- Before first use, read the manufacturer’s instructions for operation, safety limits, cleaning and maintenance.
- Use the hydraulic foot pedal to raise or lower the couch between approximately 42 cm and 91 cm; adjust height smoothly and avoid sudden movements, especially with a patient on the couch.
- Ensure the retractable castors are in the locked/stable position during treatment so the couch does not move unintentionally.
- Adjust the backrest to the desired angle for assessment or treatment, confirming that the mechanism locks securely before loading.
- Use the breathing hole and plug appropriately when treating patients in the prone position, ensuring the plug is stored safely when removed.
- For hoist-assisted transfers, position the couch at an appropriate height and ensure the hoist legs can pass beneath the frame, taking advantage of the approx. 14 cm hoist clearance; follow local manual-handling and hoist-usage policies.
- Clean the upholstery and high-touch surfaces between patients with approved detergents/disinfectants compatible with antimicrobial healthcare vinyl, in line with local infection-control guidelines.
- Visually inspect frame, upholstery, hydraulic system, moving joints and castors regularly; if any damage, unusual noise, oil leakage or instability is observed, remove the couch from service and arrange inspection/repair by a qualified service engineer or Plinth Medical service partner.
- Do not exceed the stated safe working load and avoid using the couch for activities outside its intended clinical purpose.
Contraindications
- Do not use with patients whose weight exceeds the stated safe working load for the hydraulic model (approximately 250 kg, including patient and any accessories on the couch).
- Do not use the couch if there is visible damage to the frame, hydraulic mechanism, upholstery, castors or backrest mechanism, or if abnormal noises, leaks or instability are detected.
- Avoid use on significantly uneven or unstable flooring where the couch cannot be stabilised safely.
- Use caution with patients who are at high risk of falls or who cannot tolerate height or position changes; adjust the couch slowly and ensure appropriate supports and supervision.
- Electrical accessories (on electric versions) must not be used in environments that do not meet the specified electrical safety and environmental standards; follow all manufacturer electrical safety warnings.
Adverse Effects
- If overloaded or used when damaged, there is a risk of mechanical failure or instability that may result in patient or staff injury.
- Improper adjustment of the height or backrest while a patient is transferring or unsupported may increase the risk of falls or musculoskeletal strain.
- Inadequate cleaning and disinfection can compromise infection control and contribute to cross-contamination between patients.
- Prolonged therapy sessions without appropriate repositioning and pressure relief may contribute to discomfort or pressure-related skin issues in high-risk patients, as with any treatment surface.
- Untrained or incorrect use of the couch or accessories may lead to avoidable incidents or equipment damage.
Storage Conditions
- Designed to be installed and used in a dry, indoor clinical environment such as hospital gyms, physiotherapy departments or rehabilitation units.
- Keep away from direct sources of intense heat and prolonged direct sunlight to reduce risk of fading or degradation of vinyl upholstery.
- Do not store heavy or sharp items on the couch surface when not in use to avoid damage to foam and upholstery.
- Ensure the area around the base remains clear to maintain hoist access and prevent impact damage to castors or frame members.
- If the couch is taken out of service for an extended period, clean thoroughly, set to a mid-height position to reduce stress on the hydraulic system, and store in a clean, dry room.
Duration
Not clinically specified; the couch is intended to support patients for the duration of neurological assessments and treatment sessions as determined by clinical protocols and practitioner judgement.
Onset
Not applicable; this is a medical furniture and patient positioning device rather than a pharmacological treatment or active therapeutic modality.
