Description

Single-use, non-sterile wooden tongue depressors made from white birch, designed to press down the tongue to allow for examination of the throat and oral cavity. Supplied as a pack of 100 adult-size depressors (approx. 150 × 18 mm) with smooth, rounded corners for improved patient comfort, and packed in a clean environment for clinical use. Suitable for oral/throat examination in general practice, ENT, dental or clinic settings.

Indications

Depression of the tongue during oral and oropharyngeal examination to allow inspection of the throat, tonsils, mouth and associated structures.
Usage in general practice, ENT clinics, dental clinics, paediatric and adult patient assessments (adult size), pre-operative assessments, and routine check-ups requiring oral cavity inspection.
Useful in first-aid kits, screening clinics, hospitals, outpatient departments, and mobile clinics where disposable oral examination tools are required.

Composition

White birch wood (natural, untreated or appropriately processed birch) for each depressor blade.
Smooth polished finish with rounded ends to reduce patient discomfort.

Usage

Remove a single depressor from the box immediately prior to use.
Use the depressor to gently press down the patient’s tongue to expose the throat, tonsils, oral cavity or oropharynx.
Use once for a single patient — do not reuse or attempt to sterilize, as wooden depressors are single-use only.
Dispose of the used depressor in appropriate clinical waste (non-sharps) or according to local infection-control protocols.
Wash hands or use hand hygiene before and after each patient examination.

Contraindications

Do not use if the depressor appears cracked, splintered or has rough edges — discard to avoid patient discomfort or injury.
Not suitable for surgical sterilization — intended for single-use only.
Not recommended for patients with severe gag reflex if alternative examination methods are advised by clinician.

Adverse Effects

Possible minor discomfort or gagging in sensitive patients during oral cavity examination.
If the depressor has splinters or rough edges, risk of oral mucosal injury.
Risk of cross-infection or contamination if reused (thus should always be single-use).

Storage Conditions

Store in a cool, dry, clean environment in original packaging until use.
Keep away from moisture, dust or contaminants to prevent degradation of the wood or contamination.
Avoid exposure to excessive heat or humidity which may warp or degrade the wooden blades.
Store out of reach of children until intended use by qualified healthcare personnel.
