Reusable community nursing transport container for sharps and clinical waste

Description

The DANIELS® Community Nursing Container - Small is a reusable transport container specifically designed for community healthcare professionals who need a robust, compliant solution to hold small quantities of clinical waste, sharps and ‘dirty’ medical instruments generated in the course of their everyday roles. Supplied with two removable dividing inserts, the container can be configured to create up to three separate compartments which can accommodate small sharps containers and/or small cytotoxic/cytostatic containers at either end, supporting effective segregation of clinical waste in line with the UK ‘Safe Management of Healthcare Waste’ guidance. The container features a fully removable lid secured by four easily operated clips for safe transportation and is supplied with an in-car bracket so it can be securely stored in a car boot or footwell. UN performance tested to Packaging Instruction 621 and certified for UN3291 clinical waste, the container is manufactured from durable polypropylene and forms part of the Daniels Transport Container Range.

Bnefits

  • Provides a safe, reusable solution for transporting small quantities of clinical waste, sharps and contaminated medical instruments in community settings
  • Supplied with two removable dividing inserts, allowing creation of up to three separate compartments for flexible internal layout
  • End compartments sized to hold small sharps containers (e.g. SHARPSGUARD® 0.6L) and/or small cytotoxic/cytostatic containers, supporting waste segregation at source
  • Fully removable lid secured by four easily operated clips ensures contents are safely contained during transport while remaining easy to open and close
  • Includes an in-car bracket so the container can be securely stored in a car boot or footwell, reducing the risk of movement or spillage in transit
  • UN performance tested to Packaging Instruction 621 and certified as suitable for clinical waste assigned to UN3291, supporting compliance with transport regulations
  • Part of the Daniels Transport Container Range, designed specifically to help healthcare providers comply with the Carriage of Dangerous Goods regulations
  • Robust polypropylene construction offers strength, durability and easy cleaning for repeated daily use
  • Compact design with convenient handle-style lid makes it easy to carry between patients, clinics and healthcare sites

Indications

  • Community nurses, midwives and other community healthcare professionals who need to transport small quantities of clinical waste and sharps between patient homes and healthcare facilities
  • Temporary storage and transport of used sharps containers (e.g. small SHARPSGUARD® 0.6L) and cytotoxic/cytostatic waste containers in the community
  • Transporting ‘dirty’ medical instruments and equipment from community settings back to central decontamination units for cleaning and sterilisation
  • Use in cars and other vehicles to hold clinical waste safely and compliantly while travelling on the public highway
  • Any situation requiring compliant packaging for UN3291 clinical waste in small volumes as part of community or inter-site transport

Composition

  • Container body and lid material: Polypropylene (PP), as specified in the Daniels Transport Container Range brochure
  • Two removable polypropylene dividing inserts for internal compartmentalisation
  • Four polypropylene lid clips (fasteners) securing the removable lid to the base
  • In-car bracket (accessory) supplied with container for secure fixing in vehicle boot or footwell (typically powder-coated metal or durable plastic – exact material not specified publicly)
  • UN-approved labelling and printed markings indicating suitability for clinical waste (UN3291) according to Packaging Instruction 621

Formulation

  • Non-sterile, reusable, rigid transport container for clinical waste and sharps (not a pharmaceutical or topical formulation)
  • Polypropylene construction providing impact resistance, chemical resistance to typical clinical waste contaminants and ease of cleaning
  • Designed and UN performance tested as compliant packaging for clinical waste under Packaging Instruction 621 for UN3291
  • Manufactured under ISO 9001-certified quality management system as part of the Daniels Transport Container Range

Packaging

  • Individual product: DANIELS® Community Nursing Container - Small with fully removable clip-on lid, two removable dividing inserts and an in-car bracket included
  • Daniels product code: DD853
  • NHS Supply Chain Code: FSL262
  • Nominal capacity: approximately 7 litres (as part of Daniels Transport Container Range specification table)
  • Container size (incl. lid): approximately H240–245 mm x L360–362 mm x W130–158 mm (Daniels Transport Container brochure and website specification; Medisave lists H250 mm x L332 mm x W143 mm – manufacturer data taken as primary reference)
  • Container weight: approx. 1022 g (manufacturer specification)
  • Packed carton specification (from brochure): carton of 10 containers, with carton dimensions approx. H462 mm x L551 mm x W376 mm and combined weight approx. 11.15 kg

Usage

  • Open the container by releasing the four lid clips and lifting off the fully removable lid.
  • Insert the two removable dividing inserts as required to create up to three separate compartments, depending on the types of waste or containers being transported.
  • Place small sharps containers (e.g. SHARPSGUARD® 0.6L) and/or small cytotoxic/cytostatic waste containers into the end compartments, ensuring they fit securely and remain upright.
  • Use the central compartment for other clinical waste items or ‘dirty’ medical instruments and equipment that need to be transported for cleaning or disposal, following local infection control and waste policies.
  • Once loaded, replace the lid and secure it firmly using the four clips, ensuring all clips are fully engaged so the lid cannot come loose during transport.
  • Use the in-car bracket supplied to secure the container in the car boot or footwell: attach the bracket according to local vehicle safety guidance, then place the container into the bracket so it is held firmly and will not tip or move during travel.
  • After reaching the destination (e.g. clinic, healthcare facility, central decontamination unit), remove the container from the vehicle and transport it by hand to the appropriate waste reception or decontamination area.
  • Open the container in a designated area, remove internal sharps containers and waste according to local protocols and dispose of or process them in line with clinical waste and instrument decontamination procedures.
  • Wipe down or wash the container as required after use with appropriate detergents/disinfectants compatible with polypropylene, then allow to dry before re-use.
  • Inspect the container, lid clips and dividing inserts regularly for signs of damage, wear or compromised integrity; remove from service and replace if damaged or no longer secure.
  • Always follow local policies, risk assessments and training regarding the handling and transport of clinical and cytotoxic/cytostatic waste.

Contraindications

  • Not suitable for transporting substances or wastes that fall outside the scope of its UN approval (Packaging Instruction 621 for UN3291 clinical waste) without a formal risk assessment and confirmation of suitability.
  • Not intended for the transport of infectious substances assigned to other UN numbers (e.g. UN2814, UN2900, UN3373) unless specifically confirmed by the manufacturer.
  • Not designed for direct patient contact or as a sharps disposal container for final disposal (it is a secondary transport container for clinical waste and sharps containers).
  • Should not be used if the container, lid, clips or in-car bracket are visibly damaged, cracked, warped or unable to close securely.
  • Not suitable for use in environments where temperatures or mechanical stresses exceed those recommended for polypropylene containers, which could compromise structural integrity.
  • Use outside of manufacturer guidance and local health and safety / waste management regulations is contraindicated.

Adverse Effects

  • No direct medical adverse effects are expected as this is a non-contact transport container; however, improper use may increase risk of exposure to clinical waste or sharps.
  • Failure to secure the lid correctly or to use the in-car bracket appropriately could lead to container movement, tipping or accidental opening in transit, with potential for spillages and staff exposure.
  • Using the container when damaged (e.g. cracked body, broken clips) may compromise containment and increase the risk of leaks or accidental release of contents.
  • Incorrect segregation or overfilling of internal sharps containers within the Community Nursing Container may increase risk of sharps injuries when opening or unloading.
  • If inappropriate cleaning agents or harsh solvents are used, degradation of the polypropylene may occur, potentially leading to structural weakening and future failure.

Storage Conditions

  • Store the container in a cool, dry indoor environment when not in use, away from direct sunlight and excessive heat to prevent UV or thermal degradation of the polypropylene.
  • When used in vehicles, ensure the container is secured in the supplied in-car bracket and not left loose where it may move or tip during travel.
  • Avoid storing heavy items on top of the container that could deform the lid or body.
  • Clean surfaces regularly with appropriate detergents/disinfectants that are compatible with polypropylene materials; avoid aggressive solvents that may cause cracking or crazing.
  • Inspect containers periodically and remove from service any units that show signs of significant wear, cracking, damaged clips or compromised structural integrity.

Duration

Not applicable \u2013 the DANIELS\u00ae Community Nursing Container - Small is a reusable transport and storage container for clinical waste and sharps rather than a medical treatment or time-limited therapy. It is intended for long-term use subject to routine inspection and replacement if damaged or degraded.

Onset

Not applicable in a clinical or therapeutic sense. Compliance and safety benefits (secure containment of UN3291 clinical waste, improved segregation and safer transport) are achieved immediately when the container is correctly loaded, closed and used in conjunction with the supplied in-car bracket and local waste management procedures.
