Fully motorised dialysis couch/chair for renal, oncology and infusion therapies

Description

The Plinth Medical Deluxe Dialysis Couch - Fully Motorised (Model 93DY Dialysis Chair) is a UK-manufactured, fully electric dialysis chair designed for busy renal and infusion units. It offers electric push-button control of height, Trendelenburg tilt (to approximately -20°), backrest, leg section and foot support, enabling safe positioning and rapid CPR postures for high-risk patients undergoing dialysis, peritoneal dialysis, plasmapheresis, oncology and chemotherapy treatments. The couch features a robust steel frame with a lifetime frame guarantee, 75 mm comfort memory foam and hard-wearing, phthalate-free anti-microbial vinyl upholstery, independently tested to reduce the spread of MRSA, E. coli and similar organisms. With a safe working load and lifting capacity of 250 kg, low transfer height of around 52 cm, large 125 mm braked castors, hoist clearance of 130 mm, height-adjustable padded arm supports, matching head cushion and knee bolster, plus electronic CPR via hand and footswitch and patient/clinician hand controls, the chair combines comfort, ergonomics and infection-control performance in a compact, fully motorised renal treatment couch with an average lifespan of 16 years.

  • Upholstery cover: High-performance vinyl upholstery, phthalate-free, hard-wearing and anti-microbial with additive to reduce MRSA, E. coli and similar bacteria/fungi; flame retardant to CRIB 5 (BS 7176) and rated to withstand high Martindale rub counts for heavy-duty use.
  • Casters: Four large twin 125 mm castors with braking and central locking/steering facility for secure positioning and easy manoeuvrability.
  • Arm supports: Padded, height-adjustable armrests with auto-adjustment to seated and semi-seated positions.
  • Accessories: Matching head cushion and knee bolster as standard for additional comfort and support.
  • Electrical: Mains-powered system with electronic control handsets and footswitch, with IPX4 ingress protection and IEC 601/EN 60601 medical electrical compliance.
  • Finishes: Powder-coated frame in clinical finish with upholstery available in a wide range of Plinth Medical vinyl colour options (e.g. Almond, Atlantic Blue, Battleship, Candy, Citrus Green, Cobalt, Cocoa, Cool Blue, Denim, Gingersnap, Grape, Jasmine, Lupin, Marigold, Mulled Wine, Pillarbox Red, Wasabi).

Formulation

  • Electric, fully motorised dialysis and treatment chair with column lift, designed as a Class I medical device for patient support during renal and infusion therapies.
  • Single-patient, reusable medical furniture item intended for repeated long-duration use in clinical environments.
  • 3-section plus footboard profiling design with independently controlled backrest, leg section, footboard and Trendelenburg tilt.
  • Control interfaces include clinician handset, patient handset and footswitch for CPR and positional changes, subject to local policy.
  • Trendelenburg tilt up to approximately -20° for shock management and emergency positioning.
  • Electrical safety and IPX4 ingress protection rating suitable for typical wet-clean healthcare environments.

Packaging

  • Supplied as a complete assembled or largely pre-assembled chair, configured to customer-specified upholstery colour.
  • Delivered on a pallet or wheeled to point of use via 2-person delivery service (depending on supplier logistics) due to size and weight.
  • Includes integral electric actuators, control handsets and footswitch, fitted cushions, arm supports and footboard as standard.
  • Accompanied by manufacturer user instructions, technical information and warranty documentation.
  • Protective transit packaging (shrink wrap, foam/board edge protection) used to prevent damage during shipping and handling.

Usage

  • Before first use, read and retain the manufacturer’s user manual and any safety instructions supplied with the chair.
  • Position the chair on a level floor in the treatment area, ensure all castors are locked using the braking/central locking system before seating a patient.
  • Check that mains power is connected and that the hand and foot controls are functioning correctly, including height, tilt, backrest, leg section, footboard and CPR positions.
  • Adjust the chair to its lowest safe transfer height (around 52 cm) and ensure arm supports are in an appropriate position before assisting the patient to transfer to the chair, using hoists or transfer aids where required by local policy.
  • Once the patient is safely seated or lying, use the electric controls to adjust height, backrest recline, leg section and footboard to achieve the desired treatment posture and patient comfort, ensuring safe line access (e.g. fistula, central lines) as per clinical protocol.
  • During treatment, regularly check that the castor brakes remain engaged, the patient is secure and comfortable, and there is no entrapment risk between moving sections and limbs, lines or accessories.
  • In the event of an emergency requiring CPR, activate the electronic CPR function via the hand or footswitch to move rapidly to the defined CPR position, following local resuscitation guidelines.
  • At the end of treatment, return the chair to a safe transfer height and position, unlock arm supports if needed, and assist the patient to transfer off the chair using appropriate manual-handling techniques and equipment.
  • After each patient, clean and disinfect the upholstery, arm supports, handsets and high-touch surfaces with approved hospital-grade detergents/disinfectants, following infection-control procedures and manufacturer compatibility guidance.
  • Periodically inspect the chair for damage, loose components, cable wear or malfunction; remove from service and arrange inspection/repair by qualified service personnel if any faults are identified.
  • Arrange regular servicing, safety checks and electrical testing in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and local biomedical engineering policies.

Contraindications

  • Use with patients whose weight exceeds the stated safe working load and lifting capacity of 250 kg.
  • Use in environments where the IPX4 and electrical safety classification are not sufficient (e.g. certain operating theatres or high-risk electrical environments) unless specifically approved by clinical engineering.
  • Use without trained clinical staff supervision for high-risk patients or those who are unable to maintain safe seated or recumbent postures.
  • Use with incompatible hoists or transfer equipment that cannot safely interface with the 130 mm hoist clearance or couch structure.
  • Use where local risk assessment identifies that the profiling movements or leg/back positions are unsuitable for a patient’s specific medical condition (e.g. certain unstable spinal injuries, severe orthopnoea) without appropriate specialist advice.

Adverse Effects

  • Potential for patient discomfort, pressure areas or musculoskeletal strain if the chair is poorly adjusted or used for prolonged periods without repositioning.
  • Risk of pinching or entrapment of limbs, clothing, lines or accessories in moving sections if safety precautions are not followed during adjustment.
  • Risk of falls or chair movement if castor brakes are not engaged properly before patient transfer or during use.
  • Electrical or mechanical malfunction could result in unexpected cessation of movement or restricted adjustment; the chair should be removed from service and inspected if such issues occur.
  • Manual-handling injuries to staff if correct transfer techniques are not used or if the chair is manoeuvred without unlocking castors or planning the route.

Storage Conditions

  • Store and use the chair indoors in a dry, clean, healthcare environment within the temperature and humidity ranges specified by the manufacturer (typically ambient room conditions).
  • Keep away from sources of excessive heat, moisture or corrosive chemicals that may damage electrical components, frame or upholstery.
  • Ensure mains cable and control leads are routed to avoid trip hazards and are not trapped under castors or moving parts when the chair is moved or adjusted.
  • When not in use for extended periods, park the chair with castors locked, power isolated (if recommended) and upholstery cleaned and dried.
  • Avoid placing heavy objects on the couch surface while in storage, to prevent permanent foam deformation.
  • Perform periodic cleaning and inspection even when the chair is used infrequently, to maintain readiness and safety.

Duration

The chair is designed to support patients comfortably for typical dialysis or infusion sessions lasting several hours (e.g. 3\u20135 hours or as per local renal/oncology protocols), and may be used for the full duration of each prescribed treatment session under clinical supervision.

Onset

Provides immediate postural support, comfort and positioning benefits as soon as the patient is seated or lying on the couch and the electric adjustments are set to the desired treatment position.
