Motorised Backrest Option for Treatment Couches

Description

The Motorised Backrest For Plinth Medical is an optional electric backrest accessory for Plinth Medical couches. It allows clinicians to position patients at the touch of a button, reducing manual handling and improving workflow. When fitted to compatible Plinth Medical couches, the motorised backrest provides smooth, powered adjustment from a horizontal lying position to an upright sitting angle, enhancing patient comfort and assisting with examinations, treatments and procedures.

Bnefits

  • Electric backrest adjustment at the touch of a button, minimising manual handling and operator effort.
  • Improves patient positioning and comfort for examinations, treatments and procedures.
  • Reduces the risk of musculoskeletal strain for clinicians compared with manually operated backrests.
  • Provides smooth and controlled movement from horizontal through to near-upright sitting positions (approximately up to 80–85° on compatible models).
  • Integrates with Plinth Medical electric couches as an OEM-designed option for reliable compatibility.
  • Supports safe patient transfer and positioning as part of the overall couch system with high safe working load ratings.
  • Highly recommended option in manufacturer and reseller literature for frequently adjusted backrest applications.
  • Can be used with compatible accessories such as hand switches or foot switches for hands-free operation where available.

Indications

  • For use as a powered backrest adjustment system on compatible Plinth Medical couches and plinths.
  • Suitable for general medical, physiotherapy, musculoskeletal and podiatry examination and treatment couches where frequent backrest repositioning is required.
  • Recommended for clinics and departments wishing to reduce manual handling risks and staff strain associated with manual gas-lift or friction-lock backrests.
  • Useful in settings handling heavier or less mobile patients who require frequent changes between lying and sitting positions.
  • Appropriate for use in outpatient clinics, hospitals, therapy centres, sports medicine, podiatry and similar clinical environments using Plinth Medical couches.

Composition

  • Electric linear actuator system for backrest movement (motor, gearbox and screw mechanism) housed within the couch frame or backrest mechanism.
  • Steel and alloy structural components integrated with the plinth frame and backrest section (as part of compatible Plinth Medical couches).
  • Control cabling and connectors compatible with Plinth Medical couch control systems (handset or footswitch).
  • Fixings, brackets and mounting hardware designed for specific Plinth Medical couch models.
  • Finish and upholstery of the backrest itself match the host couch (vinyl, foam and board elements of the couch are not supplied separately as part of this accessory in reseller listings).

Formulation

  • Electrically powered backrest mechanism designed as an optional accessory (MBR) for selected Plinth Medical couch models (e.g. certain Model 93, 93CD/93CDT, 502/503 and related ranges).
  • Provides motorised backrest movement from horizontal to near upright sitting angles (range defined by host couch model, typically up to approximately 80–85°).
  • Designed to integrate with electric control systems on Plinth Medical couches (handset or optional footswitch).
  • Intended to maintain the couch’s safe working load and lifting capacity as stated for the base model (e.g. up to 160 kg or 320 kg depending on model).
  • Manufactured and tested as part of Plinth Medical’s CE-marked couch system, conforming to relevant electrical and medical device standards when installed correctly.

Packaging

  • Supplied as a single Motorised Backrest accessory kit for one compatible Plinth Medical couch.
  • Includes motorised backrest mechanism and required mounting / connection components as specified by Plinth Medical for the relevant couch model.
  • Delivered in protective packaging or carton suitable for transport to clinic or service location.
  • Non-sterile product intended for assembly/installation by Plinth Medical, an authorised service provider or suitably trained personnel.
  • Accompanied by installation and operating information from Plinth Medical or the reseller (either printed or downloadable).

Usage

  • Ensure the motorised backrest is only installed on compatible Plinth Medical couches as specified by the manufacturer (e.g. relevant models in the Plinth 2000 range, 93 series, etc.).
  • Installation and connection to the couch’s electrical system should be performed by Plinth Medical, an authorised engineer or suitably trained technical personnel, following the manufacturer’s instructions and safety guidance.
  • Before use, verify correct operation of the backrest by running it through its full range of motion without a patient on the couch.
  • To operate, use the designated handset or footswitch controls on the couch to raise or lower the backrest; keep hands and limbs clear of moving parts and pinch points.
  • Position the patient safely on the couch, ensuring they are supported and that no body parts are in the path of moving mechanisms.
  • Adjust the backrest slowly to the desired angle, monitoring patient comfort and safety throughout the movement.
  • Do not exceed the safe working load of the couch; refer to the couch datasheet for maximum patient weight and load distribution.
  • Regularly inspect the mechanism, cabling and fixings for signs of wear, damage or loose components; arrange service if any issues are identified.
  • Disconnect the couch from the mains supply before performing any cleaning or maintenance on the motorised backrest mechanism.
  • Refer to Plinth Medical’s operation and maintenance manuals for full safety, cleaning and service interval guidance.

Contraindications

  • Not to be installed on non-Plinth Medical couches or on Plinth models that are not specified as compatible with the motorised backrest option.
  • Not suitable for use in environments where electrical medical equipment is prohibited or where appropriate electrical safety provisions cannot be met.
  • Should not be used if the couch or backrest mechanism is visibly damaged, unstable or not functioning correctly.
  • Use with caution in patients who cannot safely tolerate rapid position changes (e.g. certain cardiovascular or spinal conditions); adjust slowly and monitor patient response.
  • Not designed for use in explosive atmospheres or in the presence of flammable anaesthetic mixtures.
  • Should not be used without proper staff training in operation and manual handling techniques.

Adverse Effects

  • Potential risk of patient discomfort or dizziness if the backrest is moved too rapidly or to an unsuitable angle.
  • Risk of minor entrapment or pinch injury to staff or patients if limbs or objects are placed in moving parts or hinge areas.
  • Possible musculoskeletal strain for staff if the backrest mechanism is faulty and manual force is applied instead of electric operation.
  • Electrical hazard (e.g. shock, short circuit) if the product is damaged, incorrectly installed, used with incompatible equipment or not maintained according to manufacturer guidance.
  • Risk of equipment damage or malfunction if liquid ingress occurs into the motor or control components during cleaning.

Storage Conditions

  • Once installed, the motorised backrest remains as part of the couch; store and use the couch in a dry, indoor clinical environment within the temperature and humidity ranges specified by Plinth Medical.
  • Avoid exposure to excessive moisture, corrosive cleaning agents, or prolonged direct sunlight that may degrade upholstery or plastic components.
  • Ensure mains power and cabling to the couch are protected from damage, tripping hazards and fluid ingress.
  • If the couch is taken out of service for extended periods, disconnect from mains power and cover to protect from dust and accidental damage.
  • Any uninstalled or spare components should be stored in their original packaging in a cool, dry place until they are fitted.

Duration

Durable accessory intended to function for the operational life of the compatible Plinth Medical couch when correctly installed, used and maintained; typical couch lifespans quoted by the manufacturer are in the region of many years of daily clinical use.

Onset

Immediate functional benefit upon installation and connection; electric positioning is available as soon as the couch is powered and the motorised backrest is activated via the controls.
