3-section electric outpatient examination couch
Description
The Plinth 2000 503OPE 3 Section Outpatient Couch - Electric is a robust, general-purpose three-section examination and treatment couch designed for intensive use in hospital outpatient departments and clinics. Based on the Plinth Medical Model 503 platform with an outpatient (OP) specification, the 503OPE adds a large twin-wheel castor base with central braking and steering system and fold-down cot sides (patient support rails) to enhance patient safety and facilitate easy movement and positioning of the couch. Electric height adjustment provides a variable height range of approximately 50–98 cm, allowing low entry for patients with reduced mobility and an optimal working height for clinicians. The three-section top, with adjustable backrest and foot section, enables a wide range of positioning options for examinations and minor procedures in departments such as Accident and Emergency, Antenatal, ENT and GP surgeries. The couch is UK manufactured with a very strong steel frame, comfort foam, hardwearing antimicrobial healthcare vinyl upholstery, hoist clearance of around 130 mm and a safe working load of 250 kg, and is supplied with lifetime frame and 5-year parts guarantees and an average expected lifespan of around 16 years.
Bnefits
- Three-section design with adjustable backrest and foot section increases patient positioning options for examinations and treatments.
- Electric height adjustment (approx. 50–98 cm) supports safe transfers, reduces clinician bending and improves ergonomic working posture.
- Fold-down cot sides (patient support rails) offer enhanced patient safety and security during examination and minor procedures.
- Large 125 mm twin-wheel castor base with central braking and directional steering lock provides easy couch mobility and stable positioning.
- Safe working load of 250 kg supports treatment of heavier and bariatric patients within outpatient and clinic settings.
- Hardwearing antimicrobial vinyl upholstery and high-density comfort foam provide durability and support infection-control protocols.
- Hoist clearance of approximately 130 mm allows access for many mobile hoists, facilitating safer patient handling.
- UK-manufactured with lifetime frame guarantee, 5-year parts guarantee and an average 16-year service life, offering long-term value.
- Hydraulic or electric variants available across the 503OP family, allowing standardisation across departments.
- Paper roll holder supplied as standard to support hygienic couch preparation between patients.
Indications
- General medical, surgical and nursing examinations in outpatient departments and clinics.

- Optional accessories (e.g. additional footswitch control for electric height, side rail padding, arm tables) are supplied separately if ordered.
Usage
- Install the couch on a firm, level floor, ensuring sufficient clearance around all sides for clinician access, hoist use and movement of the castor base.
- Before use, read the Plinth Medical Model 503OP/503 user manual to familiarise yourself with the electric controls, side rails, braking system and safety information.
- Connect the electric actuator to a suitable mains power supply compliant with local electrical safety standards; check that all cables are secure and undamaged.
- Use the hand or foot switch (as supplied) to adjust the couch height smoothly between approximately 50 and 98 cm; always raise and lower the couch slowly, especially with a patient on the surface.
- Ensure the central brake on the 125 mm twin-wheel castor system is applied and, where necessary, the directional lock engaged before transferring a patient or commencing examination.
- Raise the fold-down cot sides when additional patient security is required (e.g. with sedated, frail or paediatric patients) and ensure they are securely locked into position; lower them fully when transferring patients on or off the couch.
- Adjust the backrest and foot sections to the required angle for the procedure by releasing and re-engaging the gas or mechanical locks; confirm they are fully locked before loading.
- Use a disposable paper roll over the couch upholstery and change it between each patient; clean and disinfect the vinyl with approved agents compatible with antimicrobial healthcare vinyl in line with local infection control policies.
- Observe the safe working load limit of 250 kg and do not use the couch to support equipment or loads beyond this rating.
- Perform regular visual checks (at least six-monthly, or more often as required) for signs of wear, loose fixings, hydraulic/electric issues or damage; arrange servicing or repair by a qualified Plinth engineer or authorised service provider if defects are identified.
- In the event of power failure, follow the user manual guidance on safely managing the couch position and transferring the patient, and do not continue to operate the couch electrically until power is restored and the system is checked.
Contraindications
- Do not use with patients whose combined weight with any equipment exceeds the stated 250 kg safe working load.
- Do not operate the couch if there is visible damage to the frame, castors, electric actuator, controls, side rails or upholstery.
- Avoid use on significantly uneven or sloping floors where the couch cannot be stabilised safely even with the central brake applied.
- Do not modify the couch, side rails, castor system or electrical components in ways not approved by the manufacturer, as this may compromise safety and regulatory compliance.
- Use caution with patients who are at high risk of falls or who cannot tolerate changes in position; ensure appropriate supervision and support at all times.
- Electrical operation should not be used in environments where the specified electrical and environmental conditions (e.g. humidity, ingress protection) cannot be met.
Adverse Effects
- Mechanical failure or instability can result in patient or staff injury if the couch is overloaded, damaged, improperly maintained or used on unsuitable flooring.
- Incorrect or abrupt height or section adjustments while the patient is unsupported may lead to slips, trips or falls.
- Failure to raise and lock the cot sides for at-risk patients may contribute to falls from the couch.
- Inadequate cleaning and disinfection of upholstery and cot sides can contribute to cross-contamination and healthcare-associated infections.
- Prolonged immobility without appropriate repositioning and cushioning may cause discomfort or pressure-related skin issues in vulnerable patients.
- Untrained operation of the electric controls or braking system may result in unexpected movement or positioning, increasing risk of injury.
Storage Conditions
- Designed for permanent installation in indoor clinical environments such as outpatient departments, treatment rooms and GP surgeries.
- Keep away from direct heat sources and prolonged direct sunlight to reduce the risk of vinyl fading, hardening or cracking.
- Ensure the area around the base remains clear of obstacles so that the central brake, directional lock and hoist access are not obstructed.
- When not in use for extended periods, disconnect the couch from mains power (if safe to do so), clean thoroughly and set it to a mid-height position to reduce stress on the actuator.
- Do not store heavy, sharp or bulky items on the couch surface as this may damage foam, upholstery or mechanical components.
Duration
Not defined by the device; the couch is intended to support patients for the duration of outpatient examinations and treatments as determined by clinical protocols and practitioner judgement.
Onset
Immediate upon correct installation and connection; benefits in terms of safe patient support and positioning occur as soon as the couch is put into clinical use.
